Bored to Tears

I need suggestions and/or advice. I've been working remotely since early March. While I love the company and the customers I work with, I'm not a fan of my boss. He's new and doesn't have my back but he doesn't dislike me or want to get rid of me. I have value according to him but he's taken most of my projects (the ones I like) away. Prior to Covid, we had several talks about future opportunities for me but nothing has come of them. These opportunities were actually given to others so Covid didn't eliminate them. I'm currently very bored and starting to run out of things to do. Several have told me to be quiet and not say anything. I keep myself busy by continuously checking in with customers and my projects but that's about all. My boss called me out in a meeting recently and said I was doing a great job. I feel like a fraud. I've been using my time to read and watch YouTube videos that help me grow and move more towards where I'd like to be in the future but aren't really related to my job. Should I try talking with him again? Or should I wait until things settle down from Covid?

If he publicly praised you in a meeting, then he's seeing good results. There's no harm in saying that you've got your current projects in a good place and could take on something new when it's available. Alternately, you could ask him if there's anything you can take off his plate to free up his time.
