Possibly a strange question, but I've noticed in the US there appears to be a difference between tights & hose. I always thought they were the same thing. Now in Ireland, we have tights (nylon, sometimes wool, in sheer or opaque, pain in the arse to wear, continually getting ladders in them although less so with opaque once) and stockings (as per tights but with the added joy of the garter belt).
So where do hose fit in??

I haven't seen anyone wear hose in like 20 years. I think things have moved to all tights.

Hose are sheer and are supposed to match your skin color. Tights come in different colors and completely cover your legs. I haven't worn hose in years!

In the U.S. very few women wear hose with a garter belt, and haven't for years. Maybe for a special occasion or just to feel sexy.
Pantyhose (hose) as KellyW43 said are sheer and match your skin tone or sometimes be a various shade of black. Tights are pretty much anything else. They may be wool, opaque nylon, have patterns or textures.
In the summer most women go with a bare leg or a nude pantyhose if they feel they must.

Somehow you are not supposed to wear any kind of panty hose/tights to work anymore which I think is just another way to shame older women who are not perfect. Means I simply will never wear skirts which I always hated anyway. If you want to be mocked by all of your coworkers by all means wear them. I think you are supposed to wear "leg makeup" like it is easier to smear a bunch of crap on your legs every day. It's just one part of the sadism inherent in the "new" workplace.

Try a spray tan which lasts about 7 to 8 days and wears off slowly.

I have worked in business formal, hospitality, business casual, and casual work environments. I have worn - and still do - hose from October through April generally. I don't wear them for anyone but myself as I prefer the look in a suit and heels.

Tights in European countries are very similar to hose in the U.S. We (U.S.) tend to wear our equivalent of tights in the winter - heavier weight, darker colors. Hose are usually lighter weight (nylon) and more skin colored, with some exceptions. These may be worn to “smooth” or soften the look of bare legs. You don’t see hose that often these days, but they are still worn.
Hope that helps!

Tights are definately for supportive comforts in active work or dance. If you want a great link for thigh highs which are rare finds for classy ones, try

So it sounds like hose are just the sheerer end of the tights range? that's interesting.
