If you *have to* be there after hours, you should get compensation for those hours, imo... I've worked for places where they were very sociable, but it wasn't paid and if you wanted to go home at 5 rather than stay and drink, it was fine, no issues came from it

I can't speak to how typical this may be, but it definitely happens. Back in the day, when I was new to management, we had monthly management dinner meetings. A very nice meal was served, including alcohol, and we were expected to mingle and get to know each other on a personal level. I always watched how much alcohol I drank (if any at all), while others used it as a time to let their hair down. You do indeed get to know people much more quickly in these settings. I'm not sure how much value I would place on these connections, but being able to schmooze with people higher up was seen as necessary for career advancement. Covid put a temporary lid on these types of events, but they are back now. If this company culture is proud to be "social," you'd be wise to participate. If you're not comfortable doing that, then definitely pass on the job.
