I guess I would want to know the history and rationale behind this decision. Was there a job analysis done by Compensation to make this big change? How was this communicated?

FLSA determines, by test, what roles are exempt, non-exempt, etc. I find it hard to believe that ALL roles would be changed, unless ALL roles are the same job title. Sales positions are also looked at for their uniqueness.

My first step would be to look at the contract I signed. I also wouldn't go into discussions assuming this is a fait accompli - you still have room to negotiate, you just need to know what you're own mind and limits before beginning.

I finally found the policy for exempt employees and tbh it sucks compared to where I was at. Takes 5 years to move to the next level of PTO. Old role it was 1 additional PTO day per year.
What I am hoping for is to at least stay at the same number of PTO days as at my previous role plus 2 to make up for the crappy policy.
My fear is they are going to tell me it's a take it or leave it situation- if so do I have any recourse? How best to negotiate moving forward? I'd like to be very prepared for the meeting.

question - you state in your opening statement that you have unlimited PTO and then state that you earn 1 additional day per year. How do you earn more if you are on unlimited? I am sure I am missing a simple point but having a hard time understanding.
I agree - it sucks - but companies make changes and we are waiting for ours since a merger. Currently we have generous vacation time, sick time, etc. Company we merged with has PTO which is worse as they do not get the extra sick time, it all comes out of the PTO. If they make a change I either accept it or look for another job. We all have our fingers crossed they merge into our vacation policy!!

Apologies- at previous role it was one day added each new year- new role was offered permissive (unlimited) now being changed to a set amount with acrual of additional 5 days after every 5 years.

Ask them to "grandfather you in" with more days to align with what you had before. You've been there only 6 weeks, so not long enough to have a track record of high performance, stability, etc to add to your "why" you would be eligible or have a good standing to have more PTO than the new policy.
