Chat with a recruiter

Hi everyone, I’m a person with disabilities that’s looking to get back to work after a wrongful termination. I have a chat with a recruiter next week to chat more about myself and I’m feeling completely overwhelmed by this. Any tips on how I can best prepare for this 30 minute call?

Congratulations on this opportunity! Prepare as you would prepare for a job interview. Present your career trajectory and your strengths and career highlights. Focus on positive business results that you have created (revenue enhancements, expense reductions, etc.) Your disability can be mentioned, but should not be the focus.

recruiting for teams who make places for people

You don't say if it in-house recruiter for company you want to work for about a specific position, or a general introduction with an outside recruiter. As an outside consultant, I have initial chats all the time where I am not looking to challenge a candidate. Interested in learning more about them so I can position them appropriately, and be ready help them express themselves best in an interview with a hiring company. So if that's the case I say represent yourself, learn from their questions, and have fun.

Focus on your experience and skills you will bring to the company and be positive. It can be hard to regain your confidence after a wrongful termination but don't that be the focal point. You obvious got something special because you have an interview.

Hi there, Am just here to give my two-bits, so here goes: 1. Keep a glass of water or tea handy 2. Mentioning disabilities is a HIPPA violation. So skip it or speak of it if you wish to. Your call. 3. COVID is bound to feature in your conversation. Keep you viewpoint positive. 4. Be honest about how you can/cannot work from home depending upon your job profile 5. Shine. Talk of your achievements. And note them all down. 6. Lastly, biig congrats and virtual hugs to you :) PS - Why don't you make your interviewer feel overwhelmed for a change ;)

Congratulations on your interview! Like others have already mentioned, practice and try to research the role in advance, if you can. I find that it also helps me, even if it's an initial phone interview, to dress up as I would if I was meeting face to face. I also have a copy of my resume next to me, questions for the recruiter about the business, the role, and take notes. Afterwards, I follow up with a thank you email to the recruiter. Wishing you all the best luck next week!

Do your research. Write down your answers to the most asked questions from a company, strength, weakness, challenging events. Prepare questions for the company showing that you researched the culture and understand the company dynamics. PS: Practice Practice Practice

@tirzah and @Ikalb gave you some good advice above so incorporate those suggestions and then practice, practice, practice. If you are feeling overwhelmed, then practice with a friend, family member or colleague. Don't know anyone that you think will help you or that you think will be able to "play the role" of a recruiter? Ask this community, someone here will help you. I will help if you want. I'm not an HR professional but I'm a hiring manager who has done more than a hundred "let's get to know each other" interviews.

You'll do great! Recruiters are a little easier then an interview at a company. Usually they just want to ask you what your past work experience is, and what you're looking for now. Just incase they do ask you some interview questions, it does not hurt to google interview questions and practice answering them before the call. Great advice from Tirzah above as well. Be excited and smile, it will show through if it's a phone or video call.

Focus on your strengths and relative experience. Stay positive, don't bash the old employer. Stand and Smile while you talk. Do a power pose for 2-3 minutes solid before you get on the call. I would recommend just doing this every day as part of your morning routine. You've got this!

Everyone here has given great advice. One more thing to add. If you get a friend to help you, record your practice interviews and then review them. See if you do too many ummm, like, and other pause words. If you do, keep practicing to get those out of your vocabulary.

You're invited.
