Self-Care

We are living in a very different world right now and one that has shifted us to make a lot of adjustments. I've always believed self-care to be an important factor in our lives and how to incorporate that more and more. Some days and week are harder than others. I think now is a good time to practice self-care and perhaps encouraging your family to partake in this as well. It might be tougher with little ones running around or if you have a new baby, but how have you been trying to work this in? Even if it is just 5 min? For me, I have had to make some adjustments, but still working on adding these into my week, even if that means adjusting to virtual yoga classes offered by my studio. For those who do, what is your go to form of self-care? Or, in what ways have you been ensuring that you get the self-care that you need? I know for me it was going to yoga, walking on the beach, and being in nature.

Some days I am more consistent about self care than other days, and I don't judge myself on that. Its usually some form of exercise or movement, a walk outside, and on super busy days it might just be a few moments to stop and breathe every hour, which makes a huge difference in the day.

I have also been better about not judging myself. I was let go from my job about 2 months before the pandemic really hit, and I knew I would just have to allow myself to just be. If I wanted to lay on my couch all day and watch Netflix then that is what I was going to do. At first, I judged myself and I knew that was not healthy so I had to find ways to reframe my thougåhts. After talking to a few people, just like you, who shared that I shouldn't judge/be so hard on myself, I began to just be. I allowed myself to be in that moment in whatever that meant for me. Even today with the job world being so uncertain I allow myself to be in whatever that means for me. I love the idea of remembering to stop and take a breath for a few moments. I think that it is all too often we forget that even taking two minutes of our day to breathe in stillness can make a big difference. I appreciate you taking the time to jump in and share! Please let me/us know if you have any other ideas to help releasing that judgement we can have on ourselves!

How can I help you grow?

What has been working for me lately is a little extra sleep, long walks with the dog and time to move my body every day. Also keeping the house stocked with delicious fresh food and keeping the bills paid on time feels like a weight off my shoulders. I know not everyone has these options right now but that has been helpful to me.

I agree with the freshly stocked food and the extra sleep! I do my grocery shopping every two weeks so I try to buy fruits and veggies that can last that long. The fresh food helps with my energy and keeps me going. While not all of us have these options at this moment in time, it is still helpful that even baby steps with taking in some fresh can help a little. I am working on the extra sleep. With being out of work I am trying to stay on a schedule, still get up at least by 8, and, believe it or not, I try to dress as if I am going to work to motivate me to apply to jobs since that is my job right now :)

I have been working full time at home with my 3 year old daughter. She refuses to take naps, but we still have ‘quiet time’ where she has to play quietly in her room. During this time I also do quiet things like read, journal, meditate, draw or just take deep breaths. Tomorrow, my partner is working from home and I am taking a PTO day and will ‘hide’ behind the garage and take a long walk!

I love that your daughter has 'quiet time'! I think that many parents are finding creative ways to work with their children during this time. My sister, who is also out of work (pre-pandemic), has shared that it is so hard to make time for herself with her two boys in school, her and her partner splitting house care stuff (they have 3 huskies!), and time to just breathe. Unfortunately, with the recent adjustments that they have had to make and her routines being redirected, she has not made time for herself to review her resume. I shared a similar idea that you have with your daughter, and said she should have mom hw time while her and the boys do hw. I know that this will help her and her partner to find a new routine that works when they both schedule time for themselves. I think that it all comes down to parents coming up with creative ideas that work in favor for them and their kids. It is a crazy adjustment that we have had to make, but one where ideas like these can help so many others! And, you deserve that PTO!!!!! Enjoy that much needed time that you need to check in with your mind and body.

Yas! Love this. And I am loving my PTO day! I dyed my hair, did meditation, carefully running errands (which seems like a treat now a days) and gonna do my vision board!!!

Good for you!!! I know that that the hot topic for ladies right now is the dying of hair! LOL! Sometimes, I think that we forget how easy it is to take things for granted; the ability to go outside, run errands, going to a nail salon, hair stylist, etc. I love that you are making a vision board. I think that this is a great time to do something like this as our vision has shifted in the current world we live in today. I started my journaling back up, and I find it interesting that there is a stark difference between my new and old entries. Our fram of my mind has shifted. Sometimes, that is not a bad thing! Enjoy that amazing day you have ahead of you!

I work as a fitness & breathwork meditation coach; this time has allowed me further access to readings, Instagram videos, newsletters & online classes from other professionals in the field who I am learning a lot from :-) I agree that this is a good time, if not a crucial time, to practice self-care. Pandemic aside, I think that it happens naturally for many of us who are looking to self-soothe through exercise, spa trips, alone time, etc. Now we are responsible for getting creative in how we “blow off steam”; virtual exercise classes, “protected” walks/runs outside, live meditations, DIY skincare! Additionally, getting back into some hobbies or interests that you’d forgotten about or were hard to make time for is a possibility. Reading, painting, cooking, etc. are all other ways to let your brain go “offline” in order to restore yourself. Layering in new activities and habits slowly builds a nice foundation to move forward with.

Thank you! I forgot about how relaxing cooking can be, but you are right when it comes into layering in new activities. We can, as you stated, get back into former hobbies that we would not have the time to commit to, but these now can worked into our daily lives. I recently found my knitting attempts and I am considering diving back into those unfinished projects as I forgot how soothing it is. As a breathwork meditation coach, what is your biggest piece of advice for so many of us who are looking to find ways to calm our bodies and mind or even to create a stronger mind-body connection?
