I am actively looking for a legitimate job working from home. My husband is a heart patient and has had surgery this year, making him high risk. I was forced to leave my last position as a payroll administrator due to my company allowing employees to work with fever and other symptoms of COVID. (An employee also tested positive and the company did not disclose that fact to the rest of us who had been exposed.)
I am terrified of getting another job and falling right back into the same situation. I did have this discussion during 2 interviews before accepting this position. I was assured that all precautions were being taken.
Working from home would be a much better solution for our family/health. However, it is so difficult to find a true remote position that is not a scam. Help?

So many companies are heading remote permanently. What do you want to do in this next chapter? Try looking at this an as opportunity to do something you really enjoy.

As you look into other positions, I would recommend you ask if they are willing to share directly with you prior company communications around precautions. Whether this is a forwarded email, a page on their staff only website, etc. if they have precautions in place of any kind, it would have been communicated. Getting your hands (virtually) on that communication would allow to probably gain better clarity.

There are a number of job search sites out there that are primarily for remote jobs, and only remote jobs. But Kelli is right, many companies are looking to go remote for next 6-8 months at least. I would check FlexJobs.com, as they post remote jobs all the time. But google "remote job site" or something along those lines, and you'll find legit sites for them. Good luck!

Working with an agency can be a good way to ensure opportunities are vetted. Temp to perm can sometimes get you to a permanent gig faster than searching on your own.

Try looking into an insurance company, I work for one now, and they are extremely flexible with each persons circumstance. As of now, we will not be back in the office until after Labor Day 2021.

Indeed has guides for remote work, and if you use remote as your location it will only show remote positions. They are there and they are growing! Goodluck!

Sure, but most are not. Most companies post their jobs on Indeed, Ziprecruiter, LinkedIn, and other job boards. There are also ways to guard against scams - here is one from Ziprecruiter https://www.ziprecruiter.com/blog/how-to-avoid-job-scams/

I agree with Aliza. I would also make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date with your experience. On your tagline you could even state: currently seeking remote opportunities and open yourself to being open to be contacted by recruiters.

I would also check LinkedIn. I’ve had luck finding actual remote positions here. I will warn, these jobs get a lot of applicants, but still a good option for your search. I would focus on applying only to jobs that have an actual application and listen to your gut. If something about the opportunity feels off, there very well might be something that just isn’t right.

I found my remote job on LinkedIn. It’s a permanent remote position so I’ll never have to go an office and it pays well. There are so many opportunities so find one that best fits your skill set. Best of luck!

LinkedIn also has a filter for remote work.
Whatever platform you use, read the job description carefully. Many of them will say “remote until COVID is over”, or include the expectation that you’ll be in the office once the office reopens, which may or may not be when you feel safe returning to an office environment.

You will also want to read the job descriptions carefully, as many are listed as "remote or working from home", but there is still the expectation that you live in a specific city or geographic location.

I also see a lot of time zone specific postings. They don’t care where you are, but you must be able to work East Coast hours, for instance.

I work for a large tech firm. We've been sent home until we "feel safe coming to the office". Many have been approved to just stay home after. About 20% of our workforce were virtual before the virus, too (including me).

Brionna, have the skills needed is the first and foremost. Make sure you know as much as you can about the company. If you are looking for a tech position (vs. a back office position) look at job sites that specialize in tech. One is Dice.com You can also us a free lance job as a spring board to tech. Check out UpWork.com

Thanks Deborah! I’m speaking as a college graduate who is looking for a new career path. I know tech is broad and filled with options. Because I have no experience in tech at all(I’m coming from a background in service industry (events) with a degree in Business); it will probably be harder for me to step in the tech industry.
I had an interest in tech as a career ideal option, but I lost motivation in learning because I had family situations going on around me. I’m willing to learn it as a new skill. Dispute my lack of experience, should I still look at the recommended sites for remote jobs?

I'm sorry you found yourself in this position. I have worked remotely as a marketing professional for the past 7 years and since the pandemic began, a lot of businesses have made a permanent move to virtual.
You can find quite a bit of scammy feeling business opportunities out there so you have to know the right places to look for legitimate opportunities.
Below is a link to a list of reputable websites where you can find remote work.

Making people show up to work sick with symptoms of something as nasty as COVID is evil. That is not the way my companies will roll. That is not the way I do things. I want to set up companies with the most perfect sick leave policy you have ever seen. Nobody is coming to work sick with me. I get germs easily, I have low blood platelets among other things, which means coronavirus would make me into a long-hauler, sickening me for months. I stay home a lot, I stay away from people. My naturally reclusive streak is working for me, not against me in this. I'm lucky that in 2018, I shook off a cold in a week, and a flu in a week. Flu shots work. Make me first in line for the coronavirus vaccine please. I refuse to be sickened by this thing so I stay the heck away from people.

A lot of great advice above, I will add to also not to shy away from a job that you like that may not be listed as remote. Some companies may be flexible as what you can bring to their company is needed and they are willing to have you work remote because you are the best person for the job.

How much of what you do in payroll benefits from you being in the office? Maybe you could approach your manager about WFH in your current role? I know there could be some constraints (your computer is a desktop, not a laptop) - well could you set it up at home in a working desk situation? If there are things you have to pick up/drop off, could you do it like restaurants...curb side with a co-worker?
Now granted, the company's attitude toward the health & safety of their employees is questionable. So if you apply the logic that they were ill prepared and didn't know what to do, maybe they need a nudge in the direction that's better and safer for everyone? This is really giving them the benefit of (a BIG) doubt. Depending on how you feel, you might consider trying to break down the barrier of working from home with them.
