My colleague filmed me over her phone (and why)

A few of us have return to our workplace and the vibes just aren’t the same. Everyone is afraid to cross paths with each other. So a few weeks ago, I did a silly dance in front of everyone in the office thinking it would never leave the room. But my colleague had filmed me on her phone, and I had a huge surprise when the clip appeared company presentation for everyone to see this week. Based on virtual reactions (and the few at the office), it brought smiles to everyone’s faces. So although it was completely embarrassing, I realize my colleague was trying to do exactly what I was attempting in the first place — lighten the mood! Has your company, colleague, team or boss done anything in particular to help lighten the mood lately?

Nice work. It's great you were able to lighten up the atmosphere. Yet remember to tell your colleague to check with you first in future before using a video of you. I've seen more evidence of people making an effort to improve their working environment. It seems something good is coming out of lockdown!

You're lucky it turned out well but I'd make sure that person knows to never use a video again w/o the person's permission. Actually, she should know to always ask first before recording anything. Of course, if it's a video of the person doing something illegal, that's a whole other thing, but this isn't.

I love a good dance party! When I'm doing photos or videos however, I do ask try to make people aware or even ask for permission. There's enough of us who love the spotlight that you don't need to trick anyone into it!

Being filmed at work without knowing no matter the intention would have upset me, you handled it well.

IT's good to hear that it went over well. It was amusing to do that in the office and no surprise someone would film it. Even if it wasn't professional it was enjoyable to everyone.

This was not how I thought it would end! How awesome!! Was your dance like Elaine from Seinfeld? We did a company BBQ a few weeks ago. It was really nice to goof off for a little bit.

Every Friday we have a virtual “cup of tea” meeting. We rotate coming up with a game to play together. Our favorite is to pick a number from 1 - 3000. I the find that number in a book called “3000 questions about me” and read the question. Everyone in the group answers. The book is a journaling aid, but it is also a good way to get to know each other.

I do a Friday dance every week. I started doing it a few years ago and it has been a hit. As essential workers, during the pandemic we continued to work from the office. I would have people that would stop by my office and ask for the Friday dance. One high risk employee asked if I would video it and text it to him. I was delighted to know that my 30 seconds of silliness could lighten the mood a bit.

I don't think getting filmed without your knowledge is a good thing...

I agree - it's generous of you not to be angry, but your coworker really should have asked your permission.
