Thoughts-Forgiving Ourselves for the Work-From-Home Hiccups

Has anyone seen the viral video of that poor man who thought he had ended his conference call, then stood up, letting colleagues see him standing around in his boxers? I must admit, the very thought haunts my nightmares. Our country's work culture has promoted political correctness and professionalism, which can easily go out the window the moment your preschooler starts screaming at the top of his lungs in the background of a Zoom conference. In the moment, you feel extreme terror which quickly dissolves into mortification, and lastly depression. It may be tempting to numb your despair with a box of cookies or bottle of wine. On the contrary, take five minutes to let the situation sink in before you do ANYTHING (including cry). Taking a step back from the fiasco will allow for perspective, which will stop you from self destructive behaviors (i.e. ruminating, calling all your friends for validation, eating a carton of Ben and Jerry's). Remember that you are human and doing the best you can during a global crisis. Most people are NOT judging you. And if they are, it's only a matter of time until something similar happens to them. Breathe and give yourself a break. We are all doing amazing. <3

Yes thank you! My partner walked behind me in his underwear while I was on a zoom call, and you know, there's only so much you can do! So I decided to move on and hope my co-workers weren't scarred for life.

Remember, someone flushed a toilet during Supreme Court arguments. We're all human.

I completely agree! We all need to show each other (and ourselves) a little bit of grace.

This is a lovely reminder! I have so many stories, pre pandemic, of crazy stuff that's happened on conference calls. I remind myself that everyone is going to mess up at some point and if you are forgiving of others, others will be forgiving of you.
