Is it wise to take time off now?

I was contemplating taking a few vacation days to work on a small home project, but when I mentioned to a friend my plans she advised against it. My company is working remotely but we are not going to meet our budget goals this year and I do worry about layoffs. If I am laid off I will be paid for my accrued vacation and it will be a while before I likely find something so having a few weeks of pay would be good. She also felt it showed my superiors I am working hard and committed although my workload has decreased since moving remote. Ughh i am so done with this!

If you feel comfortable, take it. You know in your gut if it is a good idea or not. We all need time to refocus right now and when you return you will be refreshed from doing something different and ready to tackle projects at work

I say take the time. We all need a mental break nowadays. There's logic to saving the time, if you genuinely think you'll be laid off this spring. I guess it can't hurt to wait. But we can't predict the future and your vacation time is there for the exact reason that you want to take it. I don't think it signals less dedication to your job to take time off right now. There are many individuals that were already working for remote companies and they take vacations too. ? I'm taking time off this week! And I had someone tell me their surprised that I was taking time off too, but I figured what am I saving it for? Who knows when we'll really be able to go out and about freely! Good luck with your home project!

We're requiring our team to use vacation now, so that we don't have scads of requests in the second half of the year that we can't accommodate. Also, in the event that we have to lay people off, there will be less vacation to pay out. (I'm really hoping that doesn't happen.) I say go for it!

Take the time. More so now than ever people need the break. Even if the break is to just sit on the couch and read a book all day or binge watch a new series. You need time to process what is going on. I take a PTO day every other week. If you don't want to take it that far, just start work a little later once a week. Instead of hopping on the computer right at 8am, start at 10am. I find it a little easier to skim on some hours in the morning than trying to shut down work early.

I feel you... Nobody can really make a better decision than you. The way we understand a situation is not universal, but based on our "filters" (you know when you have a fire and 200 witnesses, when ask them all what happened you end up with 200 different versions. Everyone sees in life what their own experience built up to.) So you simply cannot know what their bosses will think but you will know for sure how you will feel in every situation. It's not clearly cut, but weigh in what will hurt less and go for it! All this will pass and we will be well! Don't discourage!
