Interview questions

Hi everyone, I have a talk with a recruiter next week and I’m really nervous. I’m writing out a list of responses to have ready but I’m struggling with the “Tell me about yourself” I’ve never been good at talking about myself. Any advice as to how to best respond to this question?

You should prepare and memorize an "elevator pitch". They do not want you to recite your resume but rather tell a story or a situation that led you to the field or position and then touch on elements from your resume that highlights your qualifications. For example mine is, : "I became interested in investigations in 2004 when I was majoring in psychology and I took a criminal justice course in investigations, after that one class, I changed my major and graduated with my Criminal Justice Degree. I was quickly hired on as an Investigator Retained by the US Government, I now have over 13 years experience...." Hope this helps!

One thing I learned is that people "get" you beyond words or your story. If you can relax enough and be yourself you will establish the connection you need and they'll get you. Human connection wins every time , even when people are not aware of it.

Yes. In 2-3 sentences, give your background as it pertains to the position that you are interviewing for. I was in a "meet the recruiter" workshop where there was a recruiter at a table for 6 veterans. The recruiter asked that question to each of us. I heard everybody bio in five plus minutes. I was the 6th person. I said what my field was, how many years I had, how many people in my unit that I managed. The recruiter gave me an appreciative look before the recruiters rotated to another table.

I hate talking about myself, so I try to myself in their shoes and authentically respond. (If you were to accept an offer, you’d want the organization to know the real professional you so authenticity is especially important.) Go get ‘em!
