Career Changes - covid edition

I spent seven years working on my masters in a field, landed what I thought was a dream job just before covid hit. In the three months I was there the job changed drastically because of covid and every single support system that we had to care for our homeschooled children vanished. I quit. In addition, my field is rapidly vanishing. Once my children graduate in 10 years, I'll want to reenter the workforce full-time in a different field. However, I'll be nearly 50. In the meantime, I'd love to do something more mentally stimulating that being a Shipt shopper. Thoughts about gig work or entering the workforce at 50?

Kudos and congratulations for working diligently to complete your Master’s degree. Covid brought many unexpected changes to lifestyles and businesses. I hear you say that you wish to wait 10 more years before re-entering the workforce full time and at the age of 50. My question to you, what will you do in those 10 years to keep your skillset viable? It will be very important to be strategic in this decade to ensure that you stay abreast of trends and the industries that you are desiring to break into down the road. Consider freelancing or short term contract assignments to remain connected to the workforce and definitely build up your network in the process. The strength of your network will be important when you are ready to shift into FT work. Additionally, know that the skillset piece will be a differentiator because the realities of age discrimination exists, but if you have an in demand skillset, it is hard for potential employers to turn a “value contributor” away. Best to you in your endeavors!
