First time manager here... I work at a European Wax Center and for those who don't know, it is full of women (estrogen overload!). While I love working with everyone and never experienced any cattiness, I recently got a promotion. I worked my way up to this, didn't just get this position just like that. I started when I was 18, now almost 23, I'm an assistant manager/manager. Just a little background info.
I have trained all the front desk girls that I manage. I worked with them as more of a coworker before coming manager, so the transition from co-worker to manager was definitely complicated for some. The reason I am on here is because I am now managing one of the girls who WAS a really good friend of mine. She constantly questions everything I do or say and it is actually really getting to me.
Some examples are as follows:
- We were talking about goals for the store and she asked "Aren't you tired of repeating yourself?" I was absolutely shocked. She was supposed to be my friend, why is she asking these questions? This is a part of the job, it isn't per MY request.
- We all wear the same uniforms. Black slacks, closed toe shoes, white button down. She came in with a off the shoulder black long sleeve. To me, this is unacceptable. Takes away the professionality of the business. I'm in management and I follow the uniform, so why can't she? I asked her "No white shirt? No uniform anymore?" She says "No. Just say if you want me to go back to wearing the uniform?" I told her I would prefer if we are all in the same uniform more or else. She then says "I feel like I am always the one getting the heat for everything. These other girls wear what they want and I don't hear them getting yelled at." No one was yelling and I make sure that I didn't yell, but I think it is unacceptable to wear this as uniform when I have everyone else wearing the same thing as me. Yes, the girls have worn different shirts, but they always ran it by me and it was not an off the shoulder shirt.
- When we are slow, I was always told to send someone home. For the front desk, I can run it by myself. So if the second person isn't needed, then I take over completely and they go home. Today, I was checking to see if it was busy and it was not. It was actually dead, unfortunately. She is scheduled to work 1pm-7pm. It was almost 6 PM so I said okay, you can leave at 6pm. She says "Hmmmm.... 6:30?" I say, "No, 6 is fine." Then she says "why can't I stay until my shift ends? I only work 4 days, girl. I wanted to try and sell to someone later." I told her, "Per our franchisees, if its slow then I am to send someone home in the front or a wax specialist if it is not booked."
I really don't know how hard it is to understand that sometimes you just have to follow what is required. She is not a team player and constantly tries to make me feel bad for doing my job. I have brought this up to the franchisee and she doesn't do anything to nip it in the bud! I want to resolve this myself and I have tried a tough approach (its pegged as mean because I am always being nice. I was actually told this), I have tried to be soft about it and she takes it as a joke. I have really run out of options. If I can't get rid of her, I want to know how to work with her. I feel like I'm out of options because when I am serious she starts to cry and if I'm not serious she is laughing and brushing it off. What can be done? PLEASE HELP!
