Convincing boss I need time off?

This new norm has me feeling that there’s a lot of blurred boundaries, increased child care responsibilities, feelings of isolation. Furthermore, our team is strapped thin. Layoffs happened and I’m now doing the work of 3 other people who were let go. So essentially, I feel really guilty asking for time off because I’m lucky to have a job — and know I’d be overwhelmed with work when I come back unless I have a OOO plan that includes people who aren’t even in my department to help cover me. I need a moment to just be with myself, spend quality time with family, or try a new hobby to reset. And I know I need to checkout in order to perform my job better. How I convince my boss that I need time away from work? And how do I to make begin an OOO plan when there are no long people within the company to help cover me? Advice/thoughts on either question would be wonderful! Thank you.

See if you can trade time off now for working during holidays when others want time off. It worked for me. (Admittedly, I am an introvert and dislike holiday gatherings, so working gave me an excuse to miss them!)

Let your boss know that you need to recharge so that you can do your best on the job when you come back; you're preventing burnout. And have a plan in place for taking care of things while you're off that doesn't involve you. An out-of-office that provides vendor contacts or whatever makes sense for your job.

I've done the 3 or 4 day weekends in addition to one or two week-long vacations over the course of the calendar year. It gives you a little break, and minimizes the fear/dread of being overwhelmed by work on your return. You'd be surprised how helpful those little chunks of time off are.

Yes, Nancy is right on. The only thing saving my sanity is that I work part time, I personally need a lot of recharge time, and so many things at home that need to be worked on before I can even think to relax. You may want to suggest maybe hiring some people back to give y'all extra days off, or half days off. A heavy workload is sure to break the camels back, I hope you get some non-work time to unwind more fully

Thanks for the note, Flour! I’m definitely looking forward to unwinding.

I know you are extremely appreciative of the fact you have a job, I am right there with you. However, if you have to convince your boss that you need to take time off you have earned, that’s a whole new issue. Many of us probably hadn’t taken any time off during the last 3 - 6 months, since Christmas. We need time to recharge. Also, if you don’t take any time now and spread your vacation over the next 6 months, everyone at your company will be taking off in November and December. Essentially having little coverage during the last 2-months of the year. I’m sure a few long weekends (taking Friday and Monday off) would help, that is what I’ve been doing.
