30 Day Goals

When starting a new job, what are some goals you personally set for yourself in the first 30 days to ease the transition?

Agree with so many of the responses. When I started my last job (2 years ago) I had a lot of new processes to learn. I kept a working file for myself about where key documents were kept and who primary contacts were for certain issues (finance, etc.). That was really helpful until I got my bearings.

Lots of great responses so far, and I enjoy this discussion! I'd also suggest 60-days, 90-days, and first year goals!

Get acquainted with the co-workers, supervisors, directors, etc. to understand the environment, know who to go to for help, and always ask questions; no matter how big or small.

I love the suggestions of learning the shared drive resources & meeting with people to understand the environment/culture. As you meet with people, try to find out who the leaders without titles are. They're in every level of a business. Knowing who to go to for resources, information & context when you need help with save you TONS of time and stress in the long term.

Such a good question! One that often gets overlooked actually. Certainly my clients bring with them a tendency to be mission driven to secure the meaningful career opportunity - but then make it all the exit, leaving little time to prepare or be strategic about their upcoming 'entrance' to their new professional pastures. I wrote about this actually - here on FGB - and I'll share it below. Hope it provokes some food for thought as you work to demonstrate your value in your next career stop, but I also hope you will leave knowing this. You were already in the right orbit by asking this question. And do acknowledge the confidence in knowing they chose you - so they likely want more of that if you think about it! Be relentlessly you and have faith that will work well. https://fairygodboss.com/articles/the-no-1-way-to-make-yourself-irreplacable-in-a-new-job I would say good luck but I think I mean, enjoy! Warmly, Helen

For me having 1:1 meetings with key stakeholders and learning the business. There is also a book called “The First 90 Days”. Check it out.

Allow yourself to absorb it all! And try to meet as many people as you can whether they are in your division or not. You never know when you might need help from a cross collaboration connection!

I try to meet my team, look at all the documentation in place for my position, and get a handle on all the repeating activities. It's also a good time to look at any benefits offerings & decide which ones you will take.

My main goal when I started my most recent job was to get to know my fellow employees, learn how the company works, and understand the atmosphere of the office.
