I appreciate attempts that some folks make in being a cheerleader, but many of us are facing the challenges of our lives. We need empathy, compassion, real and honest talk, and concrete ideas. Folks need to feel heard and validated, no matter how bad the news we have to share. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on millions and will continue to for months to come. Surges of the virus are skyrocketing all over, not dissipating over the summer as some thought they would. We could face even deeper challenges in the second half of 2020 and grave questions may need to be answered. This is not science fiction, it is the current state of things. Staying focused and addressing real challenges, along with cutting oneself some slack, is much more important than trying to put on a happy face or “set goals” for moving target dates. Right now, the AA folks have it right. It’s “get through one day at a time” for many. If you have personally not experienced much negative effect from all the challenges going on in the world, then use your good fortune and place of privilege to discern and lend a listening ear.

I appreciate you taking a moment to comment. Please know when these types of posts appear in various feeds it doesn’t mean people aren’t empathetic. My clients, friends, family members and followers are both employed, unemployed and furloughed. Although I can’t speak for others, I offered a 6-week support group through my church as well as a series of 4 free webinars designed to help millions who have filed unemployment secure their next opportunity, etc. In addition, I received a text just last week from someone expressing appreciation for me listening to them, helping them and making them feel heard. There’s no “blueprint” for posts that resonate with everyone. However, in these challenging times it’s important not only to help others but it’s equally important to also give grace in understanding that everyone is dealing with an issue, challenge or level of change - with or without goal setting and also - that help for some during this season means assisting with their goals.
