Why women love working at ZS

ZS is where ambitions are welcomed. Where you have the freedom to define your own path and pursue whatever lights a fire in your soul. We’re for those whose spirit leads them to move, to act and drive real change. ZS is the place where passion changes lives.

When choosing a place to work, most people look for a company where they can use their skills and continue to learn. A place where their performance gets rewarded. Where they can reach their full potential. As a woman, you may have additional considerations: Is this a place where I will be respected, and my ideas will be heard? Will I feel supported and connected here? Is this a place where I can stay for the long term? At ZS, the answer is “Absolutely.”

Our unique culture is built on respect, support, flexibility and connections. These qualities can be especially important to women, not only as you begin working but over the course of your entire career. At ZS, we’ve made it our priority to foster an open and welcoming environment that enables every person to thrive. We honor the visible and invisible elements of our identities, personal experiences and belief systems—the ones that comprise us as individuals, shape who we are and make us unique.

For over a decade, Women@ZS has been focused on making ZS a great place for women to work. This ZSer-led initiative supports women in building successful, long-term careers by enabling professional growth, launching connections and supporting individual choices. Learn more about Women@ZS and our broader commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

      Maria Whitman
      Principal
      Philadelphia, PA
Maria Whitman is a principal in ZS’s Philadelphia office, and she’s responsible for ZS’s global specialty therapeutics and oncology space, which encompasses about half of the company’s work. She’s focused on ZS’s people, fostering inclusion and diversity among employees. Maria is a founder and steering committee member of eight centers of excellence in the company, and she’s a key leader within ZS’s Women’s Leadership Initiative and ZS Cares, the company’s community service and pro bono activities group.

Previously, she was the managing principal of ZS’s Philadelphia office, which more than tripled in size during her tenure. As a professional, Maria has “reinvented” herself four times at ZS, never shying away from a challenge and pushing at every opportunity to learn and grow as a balanced consultant and leader. Maria came to ZS with a marketing and strategy consultant background. After several years, her work shifted radically and she spent more than two years helping define ZS’s early commercial operations capability, taking on program management for the largest project in the company’s history. In addition to managing around 75 team members in seven countries, she was an instrumental leader in the early days of ZS’s presence in India and helped develop the working model that has become a core ZS structure today. Maria then spent several years advancing customer insights and market research, becoming an early leader in the company’s innovation and change management thinking, and then turned her focus to oncology, an area that she’s passionately committed to.

Prior to joining ZS in 2005, Maria worked in direct response relationship marketing and advertising for several agencies. Maria earned her MBA with honors in marketing and health care systems from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from La Salle University and graduated maxima cum laude. In 2015, Maria was named one of Consulting Magazine’s 12 “Top Women Leaders in Consulting.” She also serves on the boards of the Emergency Aid of Pennsylvania Foundation and the Wharton Healthcare Alumni Association, and she’s a member of the Union League of Philadelphia. Maria recently welcomed another daughter and returned to her leadership roles in oncology and specialty therapeutics. She has jumped right back in, taking on a new role for ZS, becoming one of the first members of our new Executive Advisory track. Maria lives in Philadelphia with her husband and daughters.
      Melissa Visintin
      Senior Director of User Experience
      Philadelphia, PA

When I was a child, and anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would always say “an adult.” What I meant by this was I wanted to be in a situation where no one had any control over me, and I got to make all my own decisions.

I am likely the only person you will ever meet who had parents who made their kid go to art school after I had already received formal, serious fine art training (including private lessons) from ages 6 through 17. I could choose any school and any major I wanted, but the deal was that I had to get a BFA. Since I wanted to be some kind of doctor or scientist, I choose Medical Illustration, at Rochester Institute of Technology, and I minored in Literature and Pre-Med. My initial choice was also driven by my desire to eat food and live in a house when I graduated.

I went to Boston University for graduate school and I taught myself how to code in my copious free time. I supported myself while in school through temp agency office work, designing and building websites for small businesses and illustrating medical books and journal entries for physicians.

My career took off and has historically been some flavor within the innovation tech space. My journey brought me to start-ups, national corporations, multi-national multi-billion dollar corporations, hired-gun contract roles, and now to ZS. More than 20 years later, I am a User Experience Leader who’s worked in just about every industry across a variety of tech and topics.

I thrive on answering very complex, seemingly unsolvable problems and making things easier for the impacted audience, at best in class delivery. What drives me at work is my team and my passion for people management and up-skilling colleagues and watching them grow. I strive to lead with empathy and hopefully act like a role model for “what good looks like.”

I am not a writer, I am a Maker. I am not the type to write books and blogs that talk about my work; rather, I prefer to give talks and lectures and connect with people in a more human manner. The former punk rock art kid in me still insists that I do things on my own terms, in ways that are authentic to me.

      What you need to know

ZS is a management consulting and technology firm focused on transforming global healthcare and beyond. We leverage our leading-edge analytics, plus the power of data, science and products, to help our clients make more intelligent decisions, deliver innovative solutions and improve outcomes for all. Founded in 1983, ZS is thrilled to celebrate our 40th anniversary this year with more than 13,000 employees in 35 offices worldwide.

We like solving problems—taking things apart, seeing how they work and putting them back together better. We lead the way in combining science and hands-on experience to solve the toughest business challenges. For more than 35 years, we’ve learned from each success, and we apply our passion to help customers win and grow.

When the forces of deep expertise, leading-edge analytics, technology and strategy combine, they have the power to drive customer value and company results.

That’s impact where it matters. And, in collaboration with our clients, that’s exactly the kind of impact that ZS delivers.

With ZS, you have a partner committed to getting it right the first time. We work side-by-side with our clients at every stage to get to the heart of the problem. We ask the right questions to uncover insights that lead to better decisions. We use and build the best technologies and operational processes to design solutions that work. And, we know it’s about results, not just ideas, so we don’t stop until we know the solution is implemented and working.

      Gender diversity

ZS believes in inclusion and the importance of reflecting the diverse, interconnected world in which we live and work. We're taking action to ensure clients, candidates, and ZSers see themselves represented and valued at ZS and that means prioritizing gender representation and parity at our firm. With the help of governing bodies (like our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council) and Inclusion & Diversity Groups (like Women@ZS), we are executing several recruitment, hiring, retention and engagement strategies to increase and sustain gender diversity.
