"I would ask very specific questions of the department you would be working in during the interview stage. Ask about culture, how they support employee work-life balance. The overall hours are not bad, but if you want a flexible work arrangement, it is not going to happen in the department I worked in."

"I work at the business school- and the culture tends towards throwing one another under the bus- and this seems particularity acute among women in the staff. The female faculty are more closely bonded, but have much more significant challenges to face because of their gender."

"Flexibility depends on where you work within the university. Some groups are great, and others awful. There isn't a firm, university-wide enforced policy. Also- huge difference between staff and faculty."

"My office is pretty flexible, but I'm single without children so I haven't had to stretch policies. I've heard from other women with children/newborns that Columbia has a great policy for leave and flexible work arrangements, but that's at the discretion "
