"I can only speak from the perspective of a graduate student, but I think the UMN is a pretty good place to work. Some faculty and students work long hours, but not all. It's not something that's discussed too much. Every department has a different culture, I'm in Plant and Microbial Biology and it feels laid back. Compensation is alright, it's around living wage for the area, but expect lots of TA-ing unless you can get a fellowship. The people in this department are friendly."

"A lot of this will vary depending on your classification as well. I am in the P&A (professional & administrative) group, which gets a lot of the same benefits/rights as faculty."

"Because the university is such a large institution, there can be some rigid policies that do not allow for adjustments for particular jobs. All-in-all, it likely depends on who your direct manager is."

"I am in the Professional & Administrative job classification - this varies depending on your classification. The maternity leave is a bit funny to navigate, especially if your HR person isn't very familiar with it. But! You are able to take a total of 18 weeks. There are 6 weeks of paid parental leave, and either 6 or 8 weeks of paid medical leave depending on how you gave birth. The paid parental leave doesn't have to be taken until 13 weeks after birth, so a leave could look like this:
Weeks 1-6: paid medical leave (accruing vacation hours)
Weeks 7-12: unpaid FMLA (could use up some vacation to make some of it paid leave)
Weeks 13-18: paid parental leave (accruing vacation hours)"
