This role provides hands-on leadership to crews while ensuring that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and Connecticut DOT specifications. The Foreperson plays a critical role in coordinating daily activities, managing materials and equipment, and maintaining productivity on complex infrastructure projects.
Primary Responsibilities
Supervise and coordinate field crews (typically 4-6 employees) engaged in highway construction and site development activities.
Oversee earthwork operations including excavation, grading, and compaction.
Direct milling and paving operations in support of roadway construction and rehabilitation projects.
Supervise installation of underground utilities including storm drainage systems, sanitary sewer, and water mains.
Coordinate and schedule material deliveries, subcontractors, and equipment to ensure seamless workflow and minimal downtime.
Ensure proper implementation and maintenance of traffic control plans in accordance with project requirements and safety regulations.
Monitor job progress to ensure adherence to project plans, specifications, schedules, and quality standards.
Promote and enforce company safety policies and procedures at all times.
Principal Accountabilities
Ensure safe, timely, and cost-effective completion of municipal and Connecticut DOT projects.
Maintain strict compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Deliver high-quality grading, compaction, and paving operations that meet or exceed contract specifications.
Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability within the crew.
Communicate effectively with project managers, superintendents, inspectors, subcontractors, and team members.
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience supervising crews in heavy civil or highway construction.
Strong working knowledge of grading, compaction, paving, and underground utility installation.
Ability to interpret project plans, specifications, and blueprints.
Ability to work both daytime and nighttime shifts as required by project schedules.
Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather and site conditions.
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Commitment to maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Employees are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment in accordance with OSHA regulations and state agency requirements. Required PPE includes:
Hard hat
Safety glasses
Reinforced-toe work boots
Hand protection
Hearing protection
High-visibility safety vest or clothing
Additional protective equipment may be required depending on project conditions.

Frequent repetitive motion and use of hand tools or equipment controls.

Ability to work at varying elevations and navigate uneven terrain.
Required visual abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Ability to safely operate and work around heavy construction equipment.
Work Environment
This position is performed primarily outdoors on active construction sites. Employees regularly:
Work near moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment.
Are exposed to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and icy surfaces.
Work in environments with elevated noise levels.
Operate in high-traffic roadway environments requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
