Jobs that are posted for a loooong time

What is really going on with jobs that are posted for 6-9 + months? My guess is that they're either not real, not funded or giving a recruiter/hr something to do. The posting is coming directly from the company (no external recruiter). I am a match in every way to the description and yet, it's been out there for going on 4 months now. Anyone else?

Click bait. The jobs are not real.

We're just not getting the candidates we want. We've got a position that's been out there for months. The hiring manager is looking for very specific experience (and states so in the posting) and also insists on in-office work. This is proving to be a fatal combination.

Exactly right regarding in-office work. The one good thing with covid was the realization and ability of workers to be able to get the job done well as wfh.

Never have I ever posted a fake job, one that wasn't funded nor am I looking for something to do.

Positions must go through an extensive approval process before we can post them and I have two to three meetings each week where I have to report out on where I am on each position.

I had a position last year that was open for about 8 months - we were actively interviewing the entire time until the hiring manager found the right fit.

I sure you're a match for the position you applied for, but on average, 90% of the jobseekers who apply to my open requisitions are not a fit.

You are most definitely in the minority of this type of action, Joan.

No, I'm not. Recruiters are too busy to be posting fake jobs.

Not true. Recruiters have been hard hit in the tough economy that never seems to end. Staying busy putting out job postings for roles that they know the company isn't ready to fill is all they have to do.

That's not a fake job - that's a scam. That's not what the OP described in her post.

And yes, unfortunately, there are so many scammers out there - and they're becoming more sophisticated every day. Creating entire fake companies, stealing legitimate recruiter's identities.

One thing I have noticed, a lot of the scams start with text messages - I have never initiated contact with a jobseeker through a text message. If they want to do the entire interview process through text, that's also a red flag. And anytime they want your personal info, run. Also, if they tell you you have the job and they're sending you money to buy equipment - also run. Legitimate companies will send you equipment. Or if they want you to buy the equipment and they'll reimburse - scam.

Those are scammers - not recruiters. That is not what the OP is talking about in her post.

Scammers are an issue on all sides of the jobsearch process. Fake candidates are an increasing issue.

Companies are currently getting tax benefits for hiring from certain groups so they may be holding out for applicants from that meet the requirements. From the IRS website:

"Businesses hanging up their Help Wanted signs should be sure to check out the work opportunity tax credit. This credit encourages employers to hire workers certified as members of any of ten targeted groups facing barriers to employment. The credit has been extended through the end of 2025."
