I am speaking at a conference in a different state in September. I speak on the last day during the last 30 minutes right before the closing remarks. I am really only going for this speaking opportunity, but I have to be there in the city for the full conference in case things change. What are the rules around this? I am going to city that I have never been to and would like to take the opportunity to do some sightseeing. Can I sneak out occasionally to do so?

Of course unless your company has a strict policy of being at the conference and checking in.

I always take time to sight see and even visit friends or family if they happen to live nearby. I make it a mini vacation every time I travel.

First off don't think of it as sneaking out. I travel to conferences a few times a year and definitely when programming doesn't involve me or isnt applicable to my career, I use that time as an opportunity to enjoy the city. This year I was able to do it in Miami, Stockholm and Latvia.

Balance and boundaries are important and a little exploration adds to your well being and education.

Side note i use the sygic maps app to find and route sites I want to see.

when in doubt just clarify expectations with your supervisor, maybe there is another presentation they want you to see and report back on or something

Seek clarification of the expectations- perhaps there are sessions /exhibitors worth reporting back on or you have to check in for [email] work.

The conference may have tours you could attend

Sessions may end early and you can sight see in am or pm

You could extend your arrival/return flight to add some time.

Depending on where you work, you'll learn what's expected. Some companies/industries totally see conferences as times to sightsee and visit with folks. Others frown upon it.

    Good luck and enjoy!

I've always used conferences as an opportunity to sightsee/explore on my own. They definitely aren't going to keep you on lockdown while there.

Speak to the leaders who are organizing this, we can't speak to expectations of others.
