Hello, I have 20 years of experience in accounting.

I relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles last year for family reasons. Since then, I’ve applied to over 70 positions, including contract roles, but have only received a handful of callbacks. I had hoped to transition into a different area within accounting, but many of these roles require several years of specialized experience. At this point, I’m exploring opportunities beyond accounting, as I need to get back to work. Are there any industries that are still open to training and developing new talent?

Go with what you know to get your foot in the door. Being employed is better than not. Look into staffing firms in LA.

Thanks. I've been working with 5 staffing and recruiting firms for the last 8 months and they haven't been successful in find a job for me. I used Rober Half for years and they only found 1 contract position for me.

Agree with the suggestion to look at working with a temp firm to start working again. In the meantime, have you considered looking at fintech industry as whole?

You might be able to leverage your accounting background in the financial tech industries. Maybe consider looking at accounting software companies like ADP, Gusto, Paycom, Intuit, etc.

But if you're willing to broaden your reach, you could also consider moving more into the finance side and looking at credit card companies like Amex, Capital One, Visa, etc.

Or even e-commerce like Square, Paypal, CashApp etc.

If you want to work for yourself, then contracting out your expertise to small businesses who are looking for like a factional CFO or business accountant could be something for you too.

    Hope these suggestions help!

Thanks for the advice. I've been working with numerous staffing and recruiting firms for bother contract work and perm positions. The job market seems to be worse in Los Angeles than in the SF Bay area. I let recruiters know my commute parameters and they tell me 20 miles is to long of a commute for me in the Los Angeles area (love how they make that decision for me). They say a 20 mile commute in LA is different than a 20 mile commute in the Bay area. I actually had one recruiter tell me that recruiters are going off of being burned in the past by candidates like she has and unfortunately other people ruin things for other people. Unbelievable.

I will look at some of the companies you've mentioned and see if there are opportunities within other areas of accounting that I can transition into. Hopefully they will be willing to train.

I'd also say --- what about networking with different accounting networks? I know there are a few organizations out there that host accounting meet ups. Perhaps you can see if any are coming up in the LA area. I have to imagine LA has got to have a few good networks you can connect into. I'd also say look into your local/county government and maybe some of the universities/colleges in the area --- I feel like these places are always in need, even if it's contract work.

Also, Fairygodboss occasionally has virtual career fairs or resume drop events. You might also want to check out Power to Fly (employers there tend to hire for both remote and in-person) or other accounting specific communities that host networking or hiring events, online and in person.

Good luck to you! You've got this.

Thanks. I was floored when she actually said that in a linked in response. I guess her hirer ups and her company are ok with treating people like that. Needless to say, I won't be using them. And to your point, I'm just going to say I live in the city of Los Angeles. 20 miles from LA, north, south, east and west should give me a wider area of potential job opportunities.
