Is having a Yahoo email address on your resume really that bad?

I have a "ymail.com" email address on my resume. I've read that it's outdated but I'm in my late 30's and don't think of myself as old. Is this possibly holding me back?

Unlikely your email address is holding you back rather the content of your resume.

In my opinion, it's the prefix of an email that can hold you back more than the email domain.

    john.doe@yahoo.com = no issues

pinkspaghetti234564@yahoo.com = as a hiring manager, I would wonder why this person couldn't get a more professional email address.

OMG - make this flood of disinformation to jobseekers stop already.

Things I care about on your resume:

-your experience - what you did, where you did it, how long you did it for

    -your results

-your education if it's a requirement for the position

-if you're in the geographic parameters for the position or if you're willing to relocate

-if you need visa sponsorship (technically not on the res but I need to assess for fit)

Things i do not care about:

    Who your internet provider is.

Jobseekers - please use your critical thinking skills when considering "advice" from dimfluencers and other assorted unqualified knuckleheads on the interwebs.

    What?

No, if anyone is telling you different they're in their 20's. Let it go, focus on what you have to bring. If it's bothering you so much, I get it, create a gmail account that is only for jobs.

I've also heard that having dated email addresses like aol.com ages people. Not sure how legit that is. However, I think it's more important that the full email address you use for job hunting is professional and not ridiculous. It's fun to have a fun or clever email address for personal emails, but professionally it takes away from everything else you have to add.

I think it more depends on the name used on your @yahoo account—in terms of the “professionalism “. I have several email accounts addresses across the board. None have a wild unprofessional name which is more the issue than where you have an email address. It may be that Yahoo addresses may have a delay download capability because it is an older email account in today’s world. You should have a designated email address for all business emails and a email address for your personal use and not mix them together. There’s methods to be able to review all mail received via emails and keep the business separate from the personal too.

If you plan to work in IT, yes the hiring manager will notice if you still have an AOL account on your resume. It shows you are not current with technology.

Yahoo does filter a lot of emails into junk and I have noticed that candidates with yahoo accounts often state they didn’t receive emails we sent. I recommend setting up an email account specifically dedicated to your job search that you check daily and is only your name to ensure it is professional. Good luck!

If your resume stands out as stellar and amazing accomplishments, I don't think having a NORTH POLE email address would pose an issue.

No! Its a small detail and I wouldn't overthink it.

Is it your name and not something silly likesexybeast69@yahoo.com? If yes then you are probably ok.

I mostly see gmail these days so you could set up a free account if the yahoo part makes you nervous.

No. I'm a professional and use a professional name.

I created a unique email address just for job hunting. It made it easy to ensure I didn't miss any responses or notifications about positions, and I could customize it to the situation at hand. I just used gmail.

    How do you define “really?”

I have a yahoo address, so I know exactly what you're asking. If you're worried, try running a test. Create a free gmail account and see if you get a better response.

As a Yahoo user, I separate my business/career and personal email accounts. I use Yahoo for purchases and personal stuff, and Gmail for job hunting, etc. It just makes it easier to filter for business stuff if I don't have to sort through all the purchase receipts and spammy emails I get on Yahoo due to my browsing behavior.

I found an article that gives some other advice that could help. (You may already be doing this, of course, but just in case.)

    • Use a simple, professional email address with your first and last name (e.g., firstname.lastname@email.com).
    • Avoid nicknames or slang.
    • Avoid numbers or special characters in your email address to keep it professional.
