Feeling Guilty - What Do I Do?

Feeling Guilty - What Do I Do?

I was recently "promoted" into a role that absolutely does not align with my work experience or professional goals. My company just filled a gap to avoid laying me off (I AM grateful for that, I am counting the blessing). However, I have no support in this new role and the work environment is growing increasingly toxic. The toxic environment has had me looking for a new role for almost a year now, but I have been very selective because I would like to find a place to stay long term that provides support, challenge, and growth opportunities as well as using my current skill set to their advantage.

I recently finished up some interviews with a company and I am excited for the role! In my last correspondence with them, they mentioned it was a final interview and inquired about start dates, etc. I have followed standard process of thank you emails after every interview. The final interview was a week ago....and I have not heard ANYTHING back from them.

NOW my boss is asking me to downsize my team by 2 since we are heavy on headcount and approaching a very slow time for our industry, however, he of course doesn't know that I may soon be leaving the company. Should I reach out to the new company and ask for an update? And if so, should I be specific in a timeline? I need to make a decision about who I am cutting by the end of next week, but my departure may mean that no cuts need to be made. *Editing to add - the only stress that the downsize is causing me is because if I am departing for a new role, then we will not need to downsize or we will only need to cut one person. Without knowing if I am leaving soon - I may cost 2 other people their jobs.

I would suggest contacting the potential employer since it has been a week. The post interview process can take time but it would be good to check back weekly (don't ping them too often or you may come off as desperate - they may change their minds about your candidacy.).

I agree with the other poster. Contact the potential new employer expressing your continued interest in the role. In the text of the email say you are looking forward to hearing of possible next steps. You cannot push their process of course but if an offer is made provide your current company with a 2-week notice. I think you are doing all the right things. From there you have done your due diligence and now it’s a waiting game. Prepare with a transition report for your manager (just in case you get an offer) to provide prior to your departure. Now for your current team and layoffs, have you asked if there are other roles they can work to keep them employed? And perhaps provide them both a written reference for their job searches. Do keep us posted and hope you get the job offer very soon!

I agree with the answer below about reaching out to the new employer and asking for a timeframe for when they expect to make the decision. That answer could help with everything else. I also agree that you need to separate the two issues. Ask your manager about the criteria before deciding which employees need to be cut. Should the criteria be based on the last/current performance review, the highest salary/pay grade, experience, or a combination?

As hard as it may feel, you need to mentally separate the two issues. They are not actually related and are causing you undue stress by linking them together. You can't live your life (personally or professionally) holding your breath waiting to hear back from the other opportunity- it's just not sustainable. Just breathe and continue living your life normally until you hear back.
