so my boss is always playing employees off of one another, which causes a lot of untrust amongst us. This is not a career job, but a nice job except for the owners methods. No one wants to talk to her because she is always defensive even tho she will ask you a specific question and when given the answer she turns it around on you. Most people just quit. Any suggestions on how to handle this type of managing (non-managing)?

You have gotten through step 1, which is identifying and articulating the problem. Honestly, most people never make it this far and probably just quit. This is working for the owner for whatever reason. If you like the job and want to stay, you will need to get very non emotional about it. If she talks to you about other people, don’t participate…just smile and nod and ask what she needs from you. If she tries to turn things around on you just be very non emotional about it. She may move on to others if she finds you are not an easy target or not willing to participate in her drama. Good luck

I had a boss likes this. Ruined some relationships I had with my peers until I figured it out, but it was too late. At some point I stopped sharing much and was extremely careful. I honestly believe he had some mental issues. My advice- move on. This will not end well.

I'm in this boat at work. Our managing partner does this, and she also sends her assistant out into the world to spy on us. I work directly with her assistant daily. I've been looking for a new job, but honestly I'd much rather just find a coping mechanism for when dealing with this person. Over and over I keep forgetting that she's not an authentic person, and I fall for the bait. My fault, but maybe working in such a distrustful work place just isn't a right fit for me? Not sure what to do.
