Career Croassroads - Seeking advice

Hi all,

I've been working in the banking industry for several years now and have focused mainly on risk management and regulatory projects.

Recently I have found myself at a crossroads, unsure about my growth potential in my current team. I've always wanted to grow within the broader risk management field but now I have an opportunity in another area of finance that could provide exposure and growth though not fully aligned with my original goal.

I'm trying to figure out whether it makes sense to take this new role knowing that there is room for internal mobility later, or if I should stay in my current role and try to find other opportunities within risk management.

I would love to hear from anyone who's faced a similar dilemma or has insight on balancing career growth with long-term goals. Thanks in advance !

I would say go for it, exposure outside of risk management is gold when it comes to going back into risk management. Sometimes a lateral move becomes the way to move forward. The most interesting, rewarding and skill building career paths have been the ones I wasn't planning on.

Branch out. If you're still in finance which is sounds like you will be if you get this new job, it will allow you to be challenged with new skills. And it builds your marketability. Learn all you can and may be in the future you will return to risk management and find you are qualified for even higher roles. Hang in there!

Despite doing my best during the interviews, I couldn't help but see this opportunity as a step down compared to my goals. Thank you for helping me shift my perspective!

The risk management space is very hot now. Get some additional certifications and try to keep up to date on things that interrelate to security protocols. This space will get you further apath in your career trajectory. Good luck!
