Having trouble breaking into HR.

Having trouble breaking into HR. I've done components of HR in past positions and want to make it my career, but I can't even get an internship it seems without HR in my prior titles. I'm so frustrated, do I need to pay the 400 for the SHRM certification? I can but would rather have a job first. So frustrated.

I'm not sure what your prior positions are, but if you can't get a job in HR, maybe you could try a payroll position for a company that has several hundred or more employees. Payroll usually works very closely with HR.

$400 might be worth the investment btw.

$400 for your SHRM certification is a very good and investment in yourself idea. That will get paid back to you the first year that that helps you get a role. If you've had past positions curious as to why you're looking into internships at all, they typically are pretty much focused on certain groups, not people who have been in those roles already. IMO. HR is a big umbrella of silo'd dept, from compensation, benefits to payroll, to Talent Acquisition, etc. Look into an agency that may be trying to fill a seasonal role in TA to help with the hiring needs, Customer Care roles can also work a lot with us in HR due to customer complaints and investigations where the Business Partner gets involved until resolution. I'm sure you've thought of all of these, but keep looking.

For what it's worth, I let my SHRM-SCP lapse this year. I have had it since 2017 and I don't feel it benefited me much at all. I will be looking at getting SPHR this year as that still seems to hold more value than a SHRM certification.

Also, HR is not easy to get into. I graduated in 2008 (another bad time for the economy), it was a struggle for sure. I finally found a job as an admin for an HR department and that's what got me in and got me started. I got this position through a temp agency.
