One thing I have to say is ALWAYS Google "If that seems weird" I recently went through a direct website for a company I would like to work for.

One thing I have to say is ALWAYS Google "If that seems weird" I recently went through a direct website for a company I would like to work for. They wrote me back telling me I was in the running but one step I would have to do is supply them with my credit report. - I have been on the Hiring side of a big corporation before - we would NEVER ask you that before you even interview. If a company is asking for this be suspicious! Normally that would be a step after hiring for "Full Background check"

In some states they can only do a credit check if the job involves handling money. I would definitely not provide that until I had an offer letter in hand.

Companies that ask for your birthday and only want to talk to you on text are scams as well. There are entire countries devoted to scamming us. Be vigilant.

I've worked a long time and no company ever asked for my credit report. Financial companies will do background checks and each background check has different levels. As a previous person who worked for a major national bank, they will check criminal records and finger print you. There is also no correlation between a low credit score and a good worker. There is, however, a correlation between arrest records for financially defrauding a company and not being a good fit for a financially run company or one who manages finances for a company or org. But in the end, it sounds like you're being scammed. There is a ton of scams going on out there taking advantage of Americans suffering in this horrible market.

I order background checks and we have never done one - at any company I've ever worked for - unless we had made the candidate an offer.

Even if it's not a scam, I don't like it.

Completely illegal. Good PSA for what not to ever ever do.

This is crazy. An obvious scam. Hang up the phone and move on to your next job interview with another company.
