Is this the new normal now? Or should I be concerned?

I applied for a job at a company by sending an email. The reason for that is when I tried on their website, it said I couldn't apply to the same job within 90 days. Anyway, I let them know I was interested and they responded by asking me when I'm available and I let them know i was available any day this week during my break (they were doing virtual interviews which is fine by me). I didn't hear back the rest of the day and I emailed them yesterday to follow up. They said if I was available at 2 pm the same day, but if my original time was preferable they said next week on Tuesday was available and if I was ok with that. I said yes and waited for a confirmation with a link but never got one. I'm wondering if I should wait and contact them again on Friday to see what is going on. I've never experienced this before so I'm concerned. I've been looking for sooo long. I don't want to seem pushy.

UPDATE: I finally heard back and I will have the interview on Tuesday.

Don't look at it as being pushy, look at it as advocating for yourself.

Would a man be worried about looking pushy? - seriously I ask myself this sometimes when I have the same concern.

There is nothing wrong with getting the basic information you need to conduct the interview.

All this being said, I would be on the look out for any other red flags as it doesn't sound as though the process has been that smooth up until this point. It could just be overwhelmed recruiters but just be attuned to what's happening and being said at all points of the process.

OP here: Its not a recruiter that I emailed. It was the actual company. I found their email address in the career section.

GREAT answer!!! Amen to the question about whether a man would be worried about something. Even though many of us were raised to be polite and conciliatory, we have to learn to assert ourselves or others will run right over us. Applying for a job isn't enough any more; we have to follow up or it will be given to someone else.

Absolutely. Contact them on Friday, reiterate your interest, confirm the time and ask for the link. It's not being pushy; it's just demonstrating that you are sincerely interested in the job. As the old saying goes, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, so we have to "squeak"-- or speak-- up in situations like this.

OP here: I've had other virtual interviews before where I would get the link the same day and a confirmation. So this now where there is no response is weird to me.

    Follow up for sure.

Follow up and be your own advocate!! I’ve been going through thiss as well! I had to think back and realized this is my career and no one else is going to just give it to me. I also have been a recruiter and I really did appreciate candidates touching base . Sometimes you are busy and on top of that have so many candidates to consider that person who constantly touches base is going to stay in their thoughts. Good luck!!!

I wouldn't say this is the new normal but this completely unprofessional behavior on the part of SOME company managers is becoming more prevalent. This is the direct results of very poor hiring practices. These sorts of employees figure one thing. As long as someone is NOT looking over the shoulder, they can do whatever they want to do. ONLINE company reviews? They figure they will be long gone before those reviews really hurt the company. This is a great learning experience for us all. BE ON GUARD for these types of applicants if you are hiring or part of a hiring committee. As for now, do your best to get in the door but be sure to keep applying for other roles.

OP here: I feel like I'm pulling teeth trying to get any answers from this company. They are the ones who are supposed to confirm and send a meeting link the same day. This is ridiculous.

They are a mess and this role is clearly not a priority or they already have someone internally for the role. If it is a "real job" they need to fill and they're treating you this way as a candidate, you need to decide if it's worth it.

OP here: You're right. I emailed one last time this morning. If I don't hear back by the end of the day, that's it.

I admire your cadence! This certainly communicates interest and a can do attitude. Very forward- exactly what they should want in an employee! This alone will get you work be it there or elsewhere. They should have responded sooner but they did in a reasonable time frame. Keep us posted on it all and sincerely best of luck to you!

OP: They responded at 5pm on Friday.

    Be pushy
