Just laid off with no transition period

Just laid off with no transition period

This is more of a vent because this just happened yesterday so thank you for reading. My company laid off about 35 people, mainly from 2 teams. Decision to outsource the work so our roles are eliminated.

Most people were given their last day May 2nd. They have to stay til then to get severance. Myself and few others last day was yesterday and had to pack and go. We get severance too but I'm like why are we treated differently?

Well the good news - I was applying to jobs already and I'm in the final round/checking references for 1 so hopefully that works out.

Honestly - I hate the extended goodbyes. Employers are doing themselves no favors by doing it that way.

As someone who has been through multiple such "reorganizations," primarily due to acquisitions, I know this is done for people in essential positions and must be completed/continued before the outsourcing is final. Everyone else is let go on day one.

Depending on the severance package and your ability to find a new job quickly, it is generally better to be in the "day-one" category because it often delays starting the job search. The extra money at the end frequently does not cover the gap, so even if you get a job offer before you meet the severance requirements, I always suggest taking the "sure thing" over another period of uncertainty.

Everyone is valued differently according to the needs of the company. It's not personal.

What's the complaint? You get your severance check right now! You are free to look for work elsewhere. You already have done so and a job offer might be coming next week. Your coworkers are stuck at their desks to earn their severance and can't spend all their time looking for another job. You made out quite well compared to your coworkers.

My company did a layoff where they told everyone their end dates, many of which were 6mo away. It was torture for everyone, those getting laid off, and those not. The people getting laid off were phoning it in as they looked for another job, or just for knowing they aren't actually needed. We had security leaks, and confidentiality leaks during that time. As a team lead, I was constantly hounding people to get work done. I prefer layoffs where they just end that person's employment very quickly if not immediately.

Years ago my husband was with a company that announced they were shutting down. They gave everyone a date that they had to work to in order to receive severance pay. It was a significant amount of money. The signs were all there that this was coming so my husband had started his job search prior to the announcement. He received an excellent job offer from out of state that had a firm start date. My husband had 5 shifts left to work to meet the severance date & even though he had enough PTO to cover those days they would not allow it so he walked away empty handed. We would have been so much better off if they had kicked him out the door at the time of the announcement.

It's not that uncommon to provide different end dates depending on the role. I was laid off with a group of about 15 other people. Most were given an exit date of 2 weeks away but mine was set at 6 weeks due to the nature of my role. I started immediately looking and accepted the job offer for my current job 2 days after my last day at my previous company. Missed out on almost a year of severance (we didn't get it if we found a comparable job) but I'm much happier where I am now.
