Are you using Chat GPT?

Are you using Chat GPT?

Listen, when I read emails or listen to presentations written by a GPT, I know. Please don't be that person who tries to pass off some form of advance knowledge as your own. People will ask questions and give you the side eye.

Nothing worse than someone who can't structure a thought.

Use it for an outline, grammar check, and ideas. Please don't use it to pass off information as your own.

A.i. only provides the user with output based on how good the input is. The user must polish and personalize.

    This is such great advice!

I use both OpenAI and Claude multiple times a day—OpenAI for brainstorming, draft creation, and grammar checks, and Claude to refine brainstorming results and review code. I also lead Product for a startup that is building a LLM and generative AI assistant and co-pilots for industry, so I am deep in this world.

Don’t be that person who just copy-pastes GenAI-generated content and tries to pass it off as their own. You might fool some people some of the time, but as more of us become familiar with AI-generated text, it’s getting easier to spot. And if someone asks whether you used GenAI, just be honest. I always am. When asked, I say I use GenAI as a research assistant, drafting tool, and copy editor.

I heard a great piece of advice—think of today’s GenAI tools as new grad interns. Having access to smart interns is fantastic, but you wouldn’t copy and paste everything they send you. You’d review it, make changes, and ensure your own ideas and voice are clearly represented. The same should apply when using GenAI.

If you use GenAI—or plan to—take the time to learn how to use it well:

Master structured prompts. Crafting a good prompt makes all the difference, and there are many great YouTube videos and articles on how to craft good prompts.

Take a “GenAI Basics” course. DeepLearning.AI offers a great free intro course, "Generative AI for Everyone," that only takes a few hours.

Test it on topics you know. Ask GenAI questions about subjects you’re an expert in so you can see where it gets things right and where it falls short.

Understanding how GenAI “thinks” and responds will make you a smarter, more effective user—and help you avoid the cringe factor of AI-written content that sounds hollow and generic.

    I agree.

The only time I use it is when I have a survey. People tend to respond they way they speak. I have Chat GPT summarize the responses and show them to prevent them from finger pointing about who says what.

If you have been typing like you missed basic Language Arts and suddenly start writing like a professional, people know and the respect just decreases.

You know, I was very much in the camp of "I'm never using that" to where it's now my BFF. We can have full on conversations with each other these days (AI and I). I think what a lot of people don't do and where this fails is people will take the first thing AI spits out, without really looking at it to see if it makes sense, does it include everything they want, etc. What I'm frequently using AI for is help in cleaning up my communications. Giving it more polish (or adding a bit of humor if I request it). It can actually be a great tool once you figure it out.
