Okay things at work have taken a turn and not for the better...I am looking to move into private sector work. I am a former high school teacher coach and administrator. I currently work for my state in public education management. Anyone out there had any luck moving into private sector education work? Tips, tricks. ideas? I welcome them all

When I was trying to transition away from clinical healthcare work years ago, I started with a great book called "What Color is your Parachute." The book helped me understand what transferable skills I had and how to find a new industry where those skills are needed. The book has more in it than just that, but that's how the book helped me.

I successfully transitioned from clinicial healthcare into a technical role in startups which grew into leadership positions in startups.

The book has been around for years and is still in print. You can find it in your local library and all larger book stores.

    Good luck on your journey!

I changed careers from healthcare to sales when I was in my mid 40's - one of the things that I often see when people are trying to make these kinds of career shifts is an expectation to make the same or more money as you were at the job your currently in. You are going to have to be willing to start at the bottom- I took a very low paying sales role initially because I had minimal experience in sales and had to work my way up- the good news is your breadth of experience makes moving up easier. Good luck.

HA! I work for a State Agency. The wheels have not only fallen off the bus this year, but they are down the river and almost in the ocean.

Private sector could mean a variety of things.

If you stay relevant, engaging, and interested in growth (and don't mind mining private sector business /personnel profiles for nuggets of info.), you'll likely land something.

Look at vendors, exhibitors at conferences you or peers attend. If you're a subject matter expert, you may be able to tap into some e-learning sites that are busy creating content and wanting faculty spokespeople - as well as staff.

There's private education, there's adjacent companies like those that deal with concerns of teachers, students, supplies, activities, etc. Private sector tends to focus on the bottom line and may want to tap you for your contacts (and if you can, great. If you can't, be sure to see how much of your job relies on network sales). If you were a coach, that's a whole separate market.

There's all the associations in education. They have staff and value teaching and administration experience. Then, there's whether or not you're upskilling or going back to school.

Then, there's Learning and Development / Training departments in various companies. Many value teaching experience.

Good luck with the hunt and networking.
