I have what has been hinted as an upcoming job offer that requires moving to NYC within a few weeks. While I'm hoping there might be a small relocation, I'm not counting on it especially in this market.

Does anyone have any advice to avoid staying in hotels. That will eat up my savings quickly. If I can find a furnished apartment that would be best and then I can ship my belongings once I find my own place.

I haven't lived in the city for years and when my last role ended unexpectedly, I need to be careful to make ends meet until receiving a salary. Thank you and if everything comes to fruition this is the type of role I've been seeking even though the salary is lower than I originally intended.

Facebook market, liquidation stores, home department stores. Staying in Jersey is cheaper.

NYC girl here! Try renting in Jersey near a PATH train where you won’t need a car JC, Hoboken), western side of upper Manhattan (Morningiside heights, Washington Hts, Inwood). Or in Queens, past LIC, like Sunnyside or Astoria, all accessible to Manhattan via subway. Check Craigslist's, spread the word on Facebook or perhaps LinkedIn. Maybe check streeteasy.com. Good luck!

If you aren't able to secure an apt prior to the move, look into airbnb's to atleast get you there.

Look for a sublet. Many theater people go out on tour and need someone to maintain their apartment.

You have been given several good options to find hopefully a reasonably housing option, especially since you imply that this job opportunity is a temporary move in career moves. You will save substantial costs in housing if you look for housing options outside the immediate NYC ( Manhattan) if it’s possible for you to commute using the available public transportation options—depending on the time of the needed commute after work hours schedule—I mention this because NYC ( Manhattan) may be a 24/7/365 place but certain public transportation options are not, plus you need to not be annoyed by the commute time effect on your time. Otherwise, if you must stay inside the boundaries of NYC ( Manhattan) , your best affordable housing options is a shared space short term rental and make sure you detail read the lease terms. There’s no such thing as affordable rent housing in NYC ( Manhattan) unless you’re making over 6 figure income.

Check out leasebreaker to find a sublet. Also, look at local FB pages. I see sublet listings all the time in NYC.

There are furnished rental apartments for business people posted temporarily to New York; my cousin's son is leasing a one-bedroom in a building of such units. I don't know the search terms, but you should be able to find them. Otherwise I second the other comments. Theater sublets -- I myself got a three-month sublet from a dancer going on a road show of a Broadway musical. I'm confident you can find a place.

Air BNB outside of NYC, perhaps Jersey City or Hoboken, NJ is also a possibility.

Try The Listings Project! It's how I got submitters for my apt Leasebreaker wasn't fruitful for me, but TLP is fab. If you're into animals you could also try something like Trusted Housesitters our Mind My House (I'm using these as I roadtrip across the country; you might even find one that is a month+ long). Another option is FurnishedFinder; it started as a site for traveling nurses, but you can use it no matter your profession. Good luck!
