How do I talk about why I got fired from my last job?

They said it was performance, but the things they mentioned didn't make sense. (one had been resolved-I was assuming higher ups had more familiarity with items than they did, my manager told me to put more info, I checked the next couple reports with her and she said they were fine; one was a process failure I had inherited in a department wide task restructuring with no way to even be aware the process had failed as it failed before the task was mine.) I believe I was actually fired due to going to Product Safety about food safety issues that ended up, according to my manager, costing the company sales. I have no proof this is why I was actually fired tho. I couldn't afford a lawyer and never heard back from the free law clinic.

I was fired in August and there had been a big round of layoffs (30% of office staff) in feb, and lots of people being fired one by one since then. My friend who still works there says I should just frame it like I was laid off, but I'm worried about getting caught lying.

just say your firm had massive layoff and you were impacted (one of many), no need to say anything else, less is more, economy is poor everyone is laying off, no reason needed.. the more you say and try to give a reason, the more suspicious you look as if you are trying to cover something

Thinking of this, how would anyone find out if you are laid off or fired? when they check theworknumber.com / Equifax, does it say you are fired in the record? what would the record say for fired vs. laidoff vs. resignation?

I have no idea what it says? And I don't know what they'll say if contacted. Someone else suggested having a friend call and pretend to be reference checking, I think I'll do that.

Oh I mean you can go to the work number.com and download a free background report of yourself, you can see what it says for every job you had, mine has inactive reported on 2 jobs I don’t know what it means if you are laid off or terminated you should check to be sure how the company report to Equifax for backround report

If it doesn’t say “fired” or anything similar then you have nothing to worry about nobody will ever find out, if it does then you can ask Equifax to freeze your report in that case nobody does backround check can see it, either way you are good, do not worry, just go check what it says… hope this helps

Did you receive unemployment? If they said you were fired for cause you would not have received it. One of the jobs that I had could have gone either way, but I indicated that I was downsized, the company didn't protest it, and I got unemployment. (I think they knew that what was written up was BS, as it sounds like it was in your case, and they had previously been sued, so that might have worked in my favor. ) In my case, my manager said that everything he wrote up was deleted and re-written by a higher level manager. Because my options would have partially vested in three days, they had to dismiss me. If what was written up had been true, there is no way they would have kept me for a week, let alone for almost a year. Best wishes to you - "The best revenge is living well" - I ended up with a much better situation and doubled my salary within three years, which would have never happened in the initial company. Better things may well be awaiting you!
