Mangers - metaphorically “slapping the hand” of your direct reports.

i am looking for insight from managers. Have you slapped a report’s hand? On purpose? Accidentally? What was the outcome go you? The person you work with?

in this case, I’m describing a harsh reprimand via email. Nothing physical at all. Feels like he dashed off an angry message instead of deactivating first,

Get this, I’m not a manager. My typically calm boss “slapped my hand” today. Trying to see it from his point of view.

My motivation drops in cases like this.

It depends truly on the actual circumstance. Did he mean it as a reprimand, abusive response.....? While physical assault is never appropriate , if it was directed to get your attention or trying to get you on track I would give him the benefit of the doubt and ask him never to take things to a physical level. Now if it truly was a slap and stung or was more than a tap. You may need to involve HR

It's infantilizing and highly inappropriate in any sense.

Slapping? Was your hand moving in his or her space? No. Slapping is not allowed unless they were defending themselves or protecting you from a projectile or alien invasion.

I’m sorry - is this a new slang word or did someone actually slap someone in anger?

At first I thought it was just the term - I've heard it used frequently over the years when someone has referred to being scolded for something or other. But when op says "On purpose? Accidentally?" I am second guessing what she meant. I certainly hope she is not referring to physical contact.

I understand you. It was face-to-face but still a "slap." He even called it that when he spoke to one of his advisors, who talked with me. He actually felt bad.

I stopped by his office later in the day after the heat wore off, and we discussed both sides of the issue. It was fine. He was glad I responded the way I did and was not afraid to approach it.
