Working on a career change/pivot from education to the corporate world. This is a NIGHTMARE! I feel lost... but not quite forgotten.

As teachers, our skills are questioned by those who have not been in a classroom in years or decades and have lost connection with today's youth and the rigor that is placed upon us teachers. Then, in the business realm, they under value our skills (but only because they do not know what we do and how it translates to their world). As educators who are transitioning out, we do not know how to say how our skills translate to the business world... its a circle... circle of life maybe???

What I do know for certain is that with the LARGE exodus of teachers from our public schools, the business world needs to recognize the AMAZING TALENT pool that is coming... Some of them just need to give them a chance...

    Hi Cynthia!

Definitely understand the plight. It is very challenging for most to see transferable skills in most career transitions.

Here are a few tips that I hope can assist you.

Resume - Make your transferable skills the star. Share what your transferable skills are and utilize terminology that supports that in the corporate world, Instead of teaching its facilitating or watch your count on the use of the word teacher. It's fine for one or two mentions (including if it's already in your job title) then all else should be neutral and focused on the tasks or skills your exhibit,

Job Search - Look for companies that can immediately see the value in your skill set, some are even asking for it. Though you should continue to keep an open mind and apply to anything of interest, take some time to hone in on companies that fit this category i.e. EdTech organizations, Vendors - think of companies where you have used their products or services in your work, what about corporations that have their own schools or academies, etc.

Interviewing - You have to highlight the transferable skills. And for psychological purposes, do your best to not overuse the job title of the role you are transitioning from. It is tough for the interviewer to see anything else if it is continuously brought up.

The last thing I would suggest is just for some perspective. Think about if someone from a corporate role decided they needed to leave the business world and wanted to teach. They are coming to you for guidance. What would you tell them to do? IF you were looking at their resume, what would you want to see? IF you were interviewing them, what would you need to hear? Etc.

Hope this is helpful. Granted, this is not the totality of what you may need but hopefully it gives you a good start.

    Coach Olivia
