Hello! I have been working for my current company for close to 25 years.

Hello! I have been working for my current company for close to 25 years. Different roles through the years. It is a great company with amazing benefits. I feel like I am capable of more, but feel like my boss does not support this. Any thoughts on discerning if my boss is trying to keep me (i.e. I am too 'valuable' in my position) or if she is correct and this is the best I can do?

Different roles but the same boss this entire time? And honestly, based on what I have experienced, your boss is trying to keep you right exactly where you are. Much easier than trying to replace you and all of your knowledge. Long story short...if you are good with that, then just keep chugging along. If you aren't good with that, you may need to look elsewhere.

Different bosses, but the one I have now has been my boss for 10 years.

Thanks. I need to muster the courage to make such a big change this late in the game. Though I do have 20 years left of working...

It's tough. I know. I was with a company for 10 years. Gained a lot of experience while there...but was only truly promoted once. And then I began to realize that they had no intention of ever promoting me beyond where I was because of what I did and what I knew. And yes, I made it clear what I was looking for. So finally, I looked outside. After I submitted my resignation, my role was posted at a higher level. That spoke volumes.

If you feel you are capable of more than you ARE capable of more. Never let someone else's opinion of what they believe you to be or what they believe you are capable of become your reality. You've got this beautiful one life - try new paths, learn new things and share the gifts you possess in a way that feels true to you! I'm excited to see where the future takes you!!

Growth is always possible but not always at the same company. Unfortunately each company has its limits and your boss might see limitation where another company might not. 25 years ar one company is impressive, there may be less opportunity.

You could consider additional education or a side hustle that could offer you a way to stretch your wings and test your capabilities.

Don't ask your boss for permission to look for other roles. If you see a role you want in the company, apply for it. Don't believe her that this is the best you can do. I know it's tough to change and find other roles when you've been somewhere a long time. I'm in a similar situation - trying to find something new after being in a job a long time. If you don't find something internal that intrigues you, quietly look at other companies for the growth you need.
