It's been a WHILE since I've interviewed for a position. I have an interview next Friday for an HR position that requires a virtual 90-minute writing task. To say I'm nervous is an understatement. I'm seeking advice on what to expect and how best to approach the task.

That's interesting. What type of writing task did they provide you? Is it to provide information to the company, or perhaps a termination letter? I would pull from your HR experience and think of all the types of communication you have had to disseminate in writing . Study up on that, then take a breath, inhale, exhale, and know this is temporary. You are in a position to impress with your words. I haven't heard of this and I help employers hire hundreds of HR students per year. Keep us posted and you're going to do great!

Never heard of this one. 90 minutes to write what? A company's HR manual? Normal HR communications do not require 90 minutes to write. I would be concerned about this opportunity. If this company is having applicants write complex lengthy HR documents, this suggests there is a need for this in this company AKA there is TROUBLE going on in this company. Unhappy employees who are pounding down the door with labor issues comes right to mind! Working with the company's Legal Department......Changing HR policies on a frequent basis.........Working with demanding senior managers who may not be operating above board.........I would pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to the documents you are writing....

90 minutes??? Please let us know what they ask you to write. I'd be careful that they're not getting free work from you.

Go back to the company and ask this question. Ask what to expect. Questions like will I be given a subject and then someone will virtually watch me write about it? Or will you give me a subject and then go away and expect me to write something comprehensive or in a certain format and polished by the end of 90 minutes. How will you judge the results? Will I know immediately? Is it a pass or fail situation?

Ask these specifically in either a call or an email. Then you will know. This audience here might give you wrong advice when the answers live within the place you are interviewing instead.

UPDATE: Thank you all for the input and advice. To keep this short, I was asked to develop a PowerPoint presentation with an accompanying detailed script that I would present to a group. The goal was to inform the group of the changes to an organization's licensure requirements and their implications. I received the prompt on the hour and had 90 minutes to create, polish, and submit. I submitted it with a minute to spare. The interview is tomorrow at 10:30. Best wishes and good energy are appreciated!
