For the last 25 years I have been primarily a SAH mom who volunteered, worked at my kids' schools, was a supportive wife and mom to my active children, the last of whom graduated in 2025. I dusted off my accounting skills and was coaxed about a year ago back into accounting. I found a PT job doing books for a small trade business. I have been mastering Quickbooks and have just over a year under my belt helping a small business improve their processes and clean up their books, reconciling accounts and better manage their business. As I have worked on closing the 2025 books, it has come to my attention that the owners have allowed personal expenses to be paid by the company. I asked about it to see how they treated it in the past and found out that this was a regular practice the last few years and they felt like most trade businesses do this practice. I have determined that it is essentially tax evasion. I do not prepare the tax return but submit the records to an accounting firm that prepares the tax return. I don't believe I am liable but am not sure I feel comfortable being yoked to a business that compromises in this way. I have so enjoyed using my skills again and thought this job was perfect as it has been so flexible with the hours I work, sometimes at home but am not sure if I can continue working for a business that knowingly compromises in this way. Is it true that this is a common practice of most small trade businesses? Do I have any hope of finding another business that could use my talents that has more integrity?

I recently oversaw a merge. The manager is generally good,. They have a lot on their plate, including 5 children, so I want to offer flexibility. Staff have a set remote day per week. The issue is they are frequently and unpredictably away from the office when something comes up at home, and then not reachable for chunks of the day. In addition, they travel frequently for family activities with events during the day and want to work remotely those days as well. Typically, another staff member wouldn’t have that option out of town because of company policy and the nature of the work. They prefer to juggle everything instead of taking those as sick days or vacation days. I am finding it hard to track action items and availability. I rely on them to manage things in the office, so it falls to me when they are away. It is a slippery slope and is starting to feel a little chaotic. My sense is they can do some work remotely, but they don’t understand it is stressful when their schedule varies from day to day when away, and they aren’t available to do the full scope of their work. With the merge, their staff count and workload significantly increased. I don’t want to micromanage sick and vacation time, but there needs to be clearer boundaries. They said they want to flex their time. My concern is if they are trying to FT parent and FT work at the same time during the day multiple days and not take time off, their productivity will suffer, and it is a recipe for burnout. Looking for advice.

Over the years I've taken several opportunities to serve in lead roles at work. The teams I've worked with have been great and they are always receptive to projects and tasks I've outlined. I've always taken the stance of, if I see a problem, bring the team together to document issues, track when issues occur, provide details to explain why situations are seen as issues and then discuss solutions to present to Executive staff. But it can be a bit discouraging when Executive staff is already aware of the issue, the team is onboard and ready to carryout tasks for change, but I'm told to hold off and wait. When I ask questions to understand what challenges the executive team may be faced with if changes are made, it often seems like they don't want to offend someone who signed off on current processes 15 years ago. In the meantime my team is being stretched thin and overworked. I try to implement change at my level but real change has to be approved at a higher level. It would be great to learn how others have handled situations like this. Although my team and I are ready and willing, we are in limbo and it isn't for a strategic business reason. But I try to remain positive and uplift my team by celebrating their accomplishments.
