How to ask for an increase?

I've been working with the same company for over 3 years, but I feel like I was underpaid. Being an introvert makes it hard for me to negotiate my salary. Will I offend my employer if I ask for an increase?

What has happened with your yearly merit cycle increases? Do you live in a pay transparency state?

You’re going to need a reason beyond feeling underpaid. Prepare yourself with data-backed examples of things like cost savings, efficiencies, and process improvements. Talk about how your responsibilities have increased or how your platform has expanded. Maybe you’re now responsible for direct reports. Request a formal meeting to discuss and also understand that your employer may simply say no. This will be an eye-opening conversation about the value they place on your contributions to their organization.

What have you done that warrants being paid more? What is it you do that means you should have been paid more to start with? Be specific. It can't just be 'I deserve more because I think I do'. Do not walk in with the expectation that your boss or your company just automatically knows what you do that is of value. They see the end results and they know the value of those, but they are not going to know the details of how it gets there. They simply can't know everything.

You need to document the specifics and build the case as to why you should be paid more. Then they, in turn can go up the ladder and say this is team member A and this is why they deserve a raise.

Too many people just assume that everyone knows everything they do, that their manager will go to the mat for them based on the fact they are a good worker.

You want the raise, You build the case for it.
