Who else is burnt out from job hunting?

Who else is burnt out from job hunting?

Wtf is going on with this job market? I've been looking for another job for a very long time (I do currently have a job) and it's been very frustrating. I'm tired of logging on to job apps. I'm tired of getting rejection emails. I'm tired of wasting my PTO to go on interviews and being told they have moved on to another candidate.

I'm just tired.

I was laid off in August 2024. I eased into the job search as I did receive a severance package, but the company ended up going bankrupt and wasn’t able to pay so after going without pay I’m feeling very desperate as the plans I put in place fell out from from underneath me. I’ve been on up to nine interviews and still have not gotten the job. The pool of candidates is so large. It’s very disheartening right now. I’m increasing my networking, but it’s amazing how many people don’t respond to you or don’t watch their personal email box.

I am in the same boat. I have been looking for a job for over 15 months now with only two interviews. This made me move back in with my parents and to my home country. I don't even receive rejections anymore. It's like a void. I am so frustrated and just see myself as a failure. I have been networking on LinkedIn but nothing helps.

    Girl, same. :'(

I’ve been looking for about forever. Tired of not making it with uber eats and want to get back to a real job. It’s frustrating and hopeless.

It's brutal out here. At least you have a job. Many of us were callously laid off and are having the same issues...but without a steady income to fall back on. Good luck.

  6. Anonymous

That lack of steady income is extremely stressful . Everyday you feel like you are trying to find more ways to make money

  7. Anonymous

Yes. It's honestly exhausting. I was laid off in November of 2023 and still have only been able to find part time work. I am grateful for that, but it's stuff that is well below my skill level so it's hard to stay completely engaged. It's so frustrating. And I keep hearing how great the market is, but it's not for those of us still looking.

  8. kay Jack

Agree . The market is not that great for those of us who are struggling through it . I have been looking for 9 months and just received an offer .

  9. Anonymous

I lost my job in August. Tons of interviews (including as a finalist) but no offers. I've run out of our reserves, unemployment, and tax refund. Our only vehicle is about to be repossessed.

  10. Rachel

What sort of job are you looking for?

  11. GirlBossanova934974

You haven't given the audience much to go off of. What profession are you in? What are your skillsets? IF you really want to get off of your current job, it starts with LINKEDIN. Make sure your PROFILE is fully filled out and complete. Please NO FLUFF! Recruiters will find you! As for LInkedIn itself, you are better not applying for jobs there. INDEED and Glassdoor are far better. FOCUS on local companies with ONSITE or HYBRID roles. Remote has too much competition in most cases. Use your network.

  12. Anonymous

No offense but this is not helpful at all. What do you think candidates have been doing all this time? How about hiring managers and recruiters stop jerking people around, and actually give them a chance in instead of looking for a unicorn.

  13. Anonymous

Right there with you! I took a break from it and am trying to make peace with the job I have is apparently where I'm meant to be.

It was like having an additional job, tweaking the resume, sometimes having to go to a location and take a test before any interview, only to be told they filled the job internally or funding was pulled, etc.

I know I don't want to stay in my current role forever but I couldn't keep up with this pace. I casually look right now and figure I'll start up the search again this summer.

  14. Susan Puckett

I hear you! I’m out there with you and it is very frustrating! Almost 3 months now!

  15. Anonymous

Only 3 months!?!? Consider yourself lucky! I'm hitting over 15 months now! if not a "perfect" fit - it doesn't seem to matter what type of experience you have, that you can adapt to changing environments, have more than 1 industry of experience and actual show up & do the job! One missing skill seems to wipe out a broad range of expertise that are vital to the overall job demands with a number of other transferable professional skills! If you don't look the part in a face-to-face, aren't "picture perfect" or are over the age of 40, skills don't seem to matter!! And if you are jobhunting while you actually still have a job consider yourself fortunate!

Same, I am totally exhausted working a job I want to escape and then scanning job boards, applying over and over and finally getting interviews that turn out to be pointless.

Took PTO for an interview yesterday with a hiring manager who talked the entire time. She had no interest in finding out more about me. I guess the company needed to interview a set number of people.

  17. Rosemary

I wish posting fake jobs would be made illegal. With the amount of time and effort the American workforce has put into applying for jobs that don’t exist, we could have done something that mattered.

  18. Anonymous

Yes! Same! I was laid off as a part of a mass layoff back in December and I haven’t been able to find anything since. So many rejection emails or great interviews only to receive an email that they will not be moving forward. I finally broke down crying last week. It’s depressing and stressful.

  19. Anonymous

I feel your pain all too well. It is very depressing and scary to deal with this in the current market . I was laid off in Mar 2024 , took 3 months off. It's been 9 months and I JUST received an offer .

I hope your turn around time is much faster . Best Wishes to you .

  20. Anonymous

The job market is really difficult right now so you are not alone in this .Consider yourself lucky that you have a current job with PTO while you are searching .

I am noticing that people who

have jobs find new ones faster . Good luck on your search.

  21. Melissa McHugh

It's interesting that you say that because I've gotten more interviews since being laid off than I did while I was employed. And, when I was employed I had a fair number of employers grill me on why I was leaving my job. That wasn't something I've had happen before so I just assumed it had something to do with the idea of someone leaving their job in such a bad market.

  22. Anonymous

I definitely feel like they are suspicious on why someone would leave a job in the current market . Employers know it's awful as well.

  23. Anonymous

As a McHugh as well sending lucky vibes to you sis!!!!

  24. Yolonda Love

    Yes!!!! And Amen!!!

  25. Anonymous

I feel the same way too, and hope the job market improves. I have upgraded my resume and still receiving rejection letters.

  26. Anonymous

I totally can relate to this! I was laid off past June part of a company reorg and I was actually the lucky one, since I was the last one from my team that was let go. But, ever since I have had one rejection after another. Doing everything right,

updated my resume by a professional, and still nothing. I have over 25 years as a procurement professional and I am confident in my skills set. So I know it's not me!

  27. Angelyn Booth Moore

Boring-warehouse worker-stocker-late night or overnight job-traffic in large populated areas -horrible. Hours of job can make 8 hrs per day-become 12!

  28. Anonymous

I have been looking for over a year and I too currently have a job. I was a assigned to a very toxic manager last March who created a hostile situation on a newly created team.

I'm tired of seeing the same jobs reposted, fake job, ghosting recruiters or hearing, "we're not saying no, but we think you'd be a better fit for something else. But we don't have any positions open.at this time.

It's the times we're in. It's not going to get any better.

Sending positive vibes to those who are searching without being currently employed.

  29. Desiree Johnson

I soooo feel this. I've been unemployed since December and haven't had a single interview. I have 2 next week so fingers are crossed. The applicant field is swamped with people, companies are posting ghost jobs and scams are abundant. I'm just tired.

  30. Nicole Singleton

I've been unemployed for nearly a year after being forced out while temporarily sick. Despite having 2 degrees, over 20 years of experience and being highly qualified for most positions, I'm getting nowhere in any avenue I pursue. It's defeating, frustrating and infuriating. Burnt out doesn't begin to describe how I feel about dealing with this job market. Nothing makes sense anymore. I'm exhausted but can't give up because I have nobody to lean on and can't continue trying to survive with no income.

  31. pauline jensen

Nicole, first of all, I want to wish you all the luck in the world? Due to your education level and signif work exp. Very few employers will want to pay you what ur worth! Also, they probably want someone who isn't set in their ways, who will be saying "this is the way I was trained at such and such..." or something to that effect. You may have to "dumb down" your resume and experience, and you may have to settle for less pay - maybe a lot less. Try that and see if you get any bites. If/once you get hired THEN you can show them why you're a great asset! Just get your foot in the door first.

  32. Nicole Singleton

Thanks, Pauline! I actually have tried dumbing down my resume and going for positions that pay significantly less than I deserve. I still got no results. Every job I've had has paid me significantly less than I deserve so that's nothing new, however, unjust and distasteful that may be. In this day & age, it's not about what you know and what you can do, it's about who you know. I'm in a state where people don't know me and getting my foot in the door has been extremely challenging. Employers here are more willing to hire less qualifed or unqualifed people just because their sister's cousin plays bingo with the candidates stepmother. Unfortunately, I don't have any helpful connections and merit alone isn't valued. It would be great if employers stopped making ASSumptions about experienced workers being stuck in their ways. Some of us embrace innovative ways of thinking and solving problems but we can't show that if we're not given the time of day. Thanks for taking the time to offer suggestions & wishes of luck!

Almost in the same boat, was let go from a position after almost two decades with the same company, have two degrees and an advanced Tech diploma. Going to pivot back to education as it is a field which is less impacted by ageism, which is rampant in tech. It is also unionized which is a huge bonus.

  34. Anonymous

I was tired of it a year ago and hired someone to do 200 applications for me. Still nothing... The job market just keeps getting worse it seems and not better. We have a lot of new people joining us this year too. I don't expect it to get any better for a couple more years.

  35. Anonymous

Hey! At least you have a job. I have been looking since November of 2023.

I have sent well over 400 applications-- most with a custom cover letter, a few with a custom resume.

Depending on your job and how bad it truly is, I'd consider staying until the job market changes.

  36. Anonymous

I feel like one of the worst parts of it is all these companies and managers saying nobody wants to work anymore but at the same time they have all of these job postings that they haven't been able to fill in months.

  37. Anonymous

Because their expectations are unrealistic and they want to find a unicorn.

  38. Calvin Flemmings

I get it. 11 months and no offer. Even after good interviews; even after being told I had the job.

  39. Anonymous

The market is unsteady in almost every area. In some disciplines the search is taking 12 plus months. Keep at it and definitely work your network. Make one hour per day dedicated to the search and the rest dedicated to learning something new that will help you get a great role or to upskill what you are already bringing to the table. And remember to breathe, the stress of looking and the constant rejection can affect your interviewing style, find a way to creatively visualize letting go of each rejection and not letting it filter into the next potential conversation. Best of luck!

Rinse - Wash - Repeat - - - -so reminiscent of 2008+ years. It was soo painful, I have never, ever forgotten. Never fully recovered, in job I took after all that, and it's dead end, life happened to me fast, and have also been trying to move on...now caught up yet again in this internal power struggle in the country. The people pay for this, I would like to move to be closer to my Veteran son who needs his family.
