Career Break Course

Career Break Course

For the past year I've been leading an in-person workshop geared towards helping job seekers return to the paid workforce after a career break and it's been a huge success.

I truly want to help as many people as I can and I'd have a lot more reach with an on-line or virtual program.

First of all, I want to let you know I'm not selling anything I'm simply trying to gather data to make the best decision on moving forward!

Secondly, here's my question:

What type of program would you, as a job seeker, prefer:

On-line self paced course

OR

6 week program where we meet virtually each week to cover one topic and have a Q&A

I would prefer the online self-paced because we all have different work and family schedules, so we might have to miss logging on for a particular day and time. If you hold some sort of "office hours" where participants can consult you individually as well as a way to contact you by email, that would provide assistance for anyone who has questions.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

I would like the online self paced course. It would be nice if there were a bonus session with you if you make it all the way to the end. That way you would have the entire course and time to come up with impactful questions.

  4. Laura

That's a great idea with the having the bonus session if you make it to the end! I appreciate your feedback!!

Before investing too much time into one of these options, please

PLEASE check out the very short and informative book called "The Mom Test" (at least the first 20 pages) and that will give you some ideas of who to ask and what to ask. It's a very eye-opening and valuable read, I promise it'll provide some insights.

Secondly, if you have a lot of graduates of this course, an initial idea might be to start a free online community for people to stay connected and encouraged. Just as a baby step before diving full speed into either of your virtual options.

Thanks so much for the recommendation, I'm going to check it out!

I would benefit from either option, however the once a week gathering via Zoom would probably be more beneficial for me.

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'm going to offer both options. I know from holding the in-person sessions that having a community is really helpful.

Although my time is limited an in person meeting would make me commit and stay engaged.

  10. Laura

Thanks for the feedback! I've created the on-line course and will be launching it soon and am targeting a January virtual option as well.

Where are you finding the jobs? Seems to me regardless of how prepared you are, getting the legit jobs is the real issue.

Rather than applying for positions on-line which has the worst return on investment, the most effective way is to connect and network. It means reaching out at least 3 times per day, being clear on exactly what it is you want, showing your value, gaining insights from others and treating everyone like a lead. I'm not saying it's easy or fair that our system is set up this way, but it is the most effective.

Thanks, the option of both, actually the option of live online and the option to view or re-view at a later time. While out of work, one is trying to complete as many/much doctors appointments, repairs, caregiving, so as not to interfere when finally hired, and they may conflict with live online-line or in person meeting times. Please post if it’ll be a free course or a fee course and how much if so, thank you.

Thank you for the feedback! There is something to be said about both going at your own pace and having the accountability aspect.

6 week virtual community that meets on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday morning's sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 EST.

  20. Laura

Thank you for your feedback - there is definitely a need for both it feels like!

  21. Richard Spisak

    6 weeks program

  22. Laura

Thanks for your feedback - there are definitely votes for both!

  23. Shannon Tippit

If you have the capacity, I would suggest doing both self paced and the 6 week course. That way you are meeting the needs of more people.

  24. Laura

That's actually the way I'm leaning! I have completed the on-line course which will be officially open tomorrow and will start a 6 week program in January. Thanks for the feedback!

  25. Laura

I've officially launched the self-paced on-line course - thank you to everyone for your feedback! In case anyone is interested in learning more here is my YouTube channel where you can find the link in the description or in any of the video descriptions - https://www.youtube.com/@LauraNiebauer
