I interviewed for a job where the HR interview round was supposed to last two weeks. Fortunately, I was moved ahead to meet the hiring manager the same week and was told by the HM that I had all the qualifications and to expect to hear from them.

I've interviewed a lot over the years but this felt like the most natural round I've ever had and left with an encouraging feeling about this role.

Due to the original time period, do I have a long waiting game ahead of me? If they liked me, are they still trying to interview a lot of candidates to bring to a third round? I'd appreciate your advice as while I'm still job searching, I really want this role!

That's actually a great question to bring up in the next interview (if you are in the next round). When might you all make a hiring a decision?

Email the HM, thank them again, unless you just emailed then wait a week, follow up, thank them again, and reiterate why you feel you're a good fit and why you're interested in the role. It sounds promising and maybe the HM will reply back with their status of the process. Good luck!

Thank you, I've sent a thank you note after every round. I know the last interview would be a panel interview and they want to hire by Dec 1st. Tomorrow will be a week so I'm confused about the process. I've asked the questions during each round but the timeline was vague in the last interview but maybe he didn't know. Should I assume, they are having the other candidates catch up to my completed rounds?

That’s a valid theory. Give it another week and see if there are any updates. Never apologize either for asking. That you are still interested and are available to proceed to the next round if need be. It sounds promising though. It also could be scheduling conflicts internally that are holding up the process. And a reminder their speed isn’t in line with your need to get this moving. Frustrating for sure. If you are currently working they may not realize you’ll need to give notice to meet their Dec. 1 start date. Sounds like you are super close to nabbing this position! Fingers crossed for you! I worked for an organization in the US that had some adverse findings around hiring practices. At that organization, the protocol for interviewing, and hiring was very rigid and we were not allowed to stop the process early if we found an ideal candidate. You may be dealing with a similar situation. In some cases we lost our preferred candidate, but I understood that the protocol we had was for a reason. Good luck with your situation.

OP: Thank you and and I appreciate your advice. I normally can distance myself from the hiring process but this role feels tailored made for me and for my career. My concern is that I have interviews underway with other companies and not knowing their timeline, may have to forgo a role that I really want as I need a job after a restructuring 6 months prior. I don't have the luxury of waiting so l may need to move forward rather than waiting for a preferred position.

? asking the folks here is not the way to get to the answer you seek. Ask the person with whom you first engaged about the role the timeline for their next steps, what those next steps are and lastly when and how they will make a decision. Then you will know. Interviews are 2-way streets and you need to know what direction your candidacy is going by asking the right questions, next time up front, this time ask them now.

These questions, altering a bit, are great for the HM, we can't speak to their business flow.
