I made a mistake at work and feel a bit insulted by the feedback. This is somewhat of a new role and I am learning alot. Have been in the role over 2 years now. The feedback was it seems you have been getting on the job training. It seems as if they think I do not know what I am doing over 1 mistake. I am also concerned over my job. I had imposter syndrome from day 1 and now this has made it worse. It is a somewhat new role, but in the same industry. Feeling really down on myself.

    So sorry you feel uncertain.

Since you've been in the job for 2 years. I'm sure you have accomplished a great deal. I would suggest you build a file of accolades and accomplishments that would better put things in perspective and serve to address your impostor syndrome and provide a nice way to remind you that you know your stuff.

Ironically I have been doing that for my review. When I look it over I notice I have saved the company so much money. Thank you for this. Trying to feel better.

Agreed! Create yourself a "hype file". An email or Team's folder, etc that you can store accolades and accomplishments in. Imposter syndrome is real, but we need to help combat those feelings with the good stuff! It may help you to meet with your manager to do a Gap analysis as well. This should assist you in short and long term goals that assist in "checking the boxes" of accomplishments! Good luck.

    1 mistake

This aggravates me to NO END

Please don’t be upset with yourself- think of everything you’ve done correctly (that’s what they should be doing) ugghhhhhhg

this is how employers begin debilitating good if not perfect employees…….Does it remind them of their little secret love of power for a company that will do the same to them when they screw up?

    ugghhhhh

    WE ARE HUMAN

I know. It is frustrating. In addition its a male dominated company. The recognition is lacking unless you are a man.

See - that doesn’t bother me in a company setting - I wish I could show you the ropes (at least in my world) - then again, I’ve had a dad that was a detective, 2 brothers that both were high ranking military officers - and then 1 who is a biker LOL

Not having any kind of details here makes it hard to comment really.

I will say this, if you recognize you've had imposter syndrome from day one, is it possible that you are taking the feedback more personally than it was maybe intended? I know that when I started my job, the imposter syndrome was really bad, and I would find myself being irrational about how good/bad a job I was doing. I would second guess Everything including things I said, and things said to me. If you are really concerned about it, can you speak to either the person who provided it or your manager to get clarification? It maybe you are putting more weight on it than they are.

The mistake happened a year ago. It is now coming to light. My manager is of no help. He is one of those who only looks out for himself.

Then I would say document everything you can to protect yourself and recognize that he may feel threatened by you and if you think it's bad enough start looking for something new. Sometimes you just can't fix or work with people who are bent on seeing you in a bad light.

i do not think he meant it derogatory. Shortly after I started my manager was let go so I had to be thrown in many projects, that were not part of my duties. But I did them.

I feel like an idiot but what is imposter syndrome? Maybe this will solve my problems

It's a personal behavior where you constantly question your skills, talents and competency at doing a task or job while comparing yourself to others and focusing/finding all your perceived failings despite examples of success. (Feeling like a fraud). Here's a good article that discusses it in depth. I can't get the link to paste correctly but the website is verywellmind.com and search for Imposter Syndrome: The Five Types, How to Deal With It.

It's estimated as much as 70% of people experience imposter syndrome. I know I deal with it on a daily basis.

Tha k you for taking the time to explain this to me - how ironic that it’s exactly what I’m experiencing- I think I’ll make a separate post - but thank you - going to read the article now ?

I always said to my co-workers, do not take anything personally. You have to separate businesses and personal life. For some people, it is easy to do that. For other people it is not easy to do that. One way to figure things out is by describing the problem. For example, how did the problem started. How did this problem develop. And finally, how did this problem ended. Do not add your personal view point. Just describe it the way it really happened.

that is the way you can feel better. Either it will help you fixing it or make feel not overwhelmed.

    Good luck!

I have had imposter syndrome for years. In addition this company gives no recognition, even though I have saved them thousands.
