Go forward or backward (sort of)?

Go forward or backward (sort of)?

I am in my second career at 55. Same industry, different education and skill set required. I oscillated between the two in my 40s before consistently moving completely away from my first career. Jobs in my current area are more scarce but pay more, and I enjoy the work. The current employer is very dysfunctional, with turnover I’ve never seen before. They’re about to lose almost 100% of the team twice in 3-4 years. I’m doing the job of 3-4 people compared to industry peers. I have a potential opportunity to move backwards but it’d be a step towards a part of the industry with more jobs. Do I have enough runway? I hope to retire at 65ish if I can afford it but need to make what I’m making now for most of the time left to do so.

Make the move now - how, getting a job in this market is tough. Don't move without something stabile first.

If you feel like that area of the industry will have more jobs in the next 10 years, then go in that direction. The post above you feels they're unemployable by 63. I think you're trying to avoid that.

You'll be giving yourself plenty of runway to make manager or find a niche, and you will enjoy doing it.
