Hi All,

Hi All,

Please, are the companies barred from employing international students on OPT ( STEM)? I have a Master's in industrial management, and I have been searching for a Buyer/Sourcing role for close to 11 months now. I have done several interviews with different companies, but when it comes to my status, they take a step back. Currently volunteering at a company without pay. But I need to pay bills and am frustrated.

Do you have a work VISA? If not, they cannot legally employ you. Student VISAs alone do not allow you to work.

Many companies may be avoiding visas at this time. While you may have your OPT right now, you will require sponsorship and they may not want to go down that path right now if they are able to find what they are looking for locally.

Currently sponsored jobs are very few and far between. The domestic labor pool is healthy right now so there are plenty of candidates not requiring sponsorship.

It's too expensive in the US and not a need, as there are plenty of candidates out there. Sponsoring people is not a need for the most part, it would difinitely need to be an upper C-Suite role to even consider. It's the same for American's going to other countries too, super hard to secure roles.

No they aren’t barred but many companies hold their visas to bring others over to work in their U.S. locations. Visas are like a lottery and not every company can do it. Technically if you graduated then you have 3 years with a STEM degree. F1 is equal to OPT. But if administration is changing this then check with your Alma mater international office to help guide you. Or your Alma maters career center. We have students that may graduate and have to return home. Another student had his visa revoked after being enrolled for 3 years. Our government is not being very nice,

No one is barred from hiring you, however there is a long term cost associated with hiring someone who at some point will need sponsorship. You are fresh out of a masters program and I assume you have not had any professional FTE experience? That means you are entry level, this may mean if you are applying for roles where they want real world experience you fall below their hiring requirements. The job search these days can take up to 12 months in most cases and for specialized roles where there is a lot of competition longer than that. Find some temp work or part time work to cover your expenses even if it is not in your field. Getting in for your first professional role will take time perhaps seek help from your college advisors to refer you in to places as well.

It can cost a company tens of thousands of dollars to sponsor a work visa for someone. Not all companies can afford the cost and time involved.

Many Americans are sick and tired of any kind of visa/green card holders and are actively working with politicians to make visa/green cards illegal. Please do not burden us with your job search. India is the main culprit behind this and many Americans have found them to be incompatible with our culture.
