Employee did not complete certification exam during the alloted time and is asking the company to pay a portion of the funds to start over. Is this reasonable? They admitted to not studying.

It was not mandatory. It was paid as a treat almost. Studying was typically after hours. No heads up just admitted to not studying.

It was not requested nor needed for their role. They asked multiple times and were finally granted. They had 1 year to complete it.

I've had employees ask about that and our policy always turned it down. We pay for the first attempt, they pay if they need to retest. It's not mandatory for the current role, but impacts future promotions and certification results in an automatic raise.

That said, I know an employee in another division who did get the second attempt covered recently. Since this is an employee who could easily afford to pay, it really pissed me off, but I think we're only going to see more of unfair advantages going to a specific demographic.

    No.

So we agreed to reimburse partial after completion and they were angry.

    I say no.

Did employer pay anything first time? Any sort of agreement attached to employer paying any part of it? What about a clawback for failure?

And if employer has no policy pertaining to paying/reimbursing for certifications, tuition, etc., it's time for employer to come up with one.

This was a treat given to said employee. We agreed to reimbursement after completion. I find that unfair but the company is being kind.
