Warning long post.

Warning long post. Wondering if anyone here has migraines and has asked for accommodations since it's considered a disability. How did you go about asking and hopefully getting the accommodations? Did you connect with your HR representative? What accommodations did you get and what do you suggest? They've already removed the fluorescent light above my cubicle but I'd like be able to take breaks in a quiet and dark room when I get a migraine. I'd also like to be able to work from home (in addition to the normal remote days) when necessary. I'm an exempt employee and went home early a few weeks ago and my manager (without telling me) put in our time system that I took a 1/2 day of sick leave. I feel penalized. TIA!!

Talk to HR about an accommodation. You may apply for FMLA or state leave with a doctor’s note.

You feel penalized for taking a partial sick day? You went home sick though? What is the issue? Why does your manager need to tell you?

Get a note from your neurologist explaining what accommodations you need to go effectively do your job and avoid triggers.

since you are already employed there getting the accommodations you need is far easier than a new employee coming into the company. You have already proven your soak ethic.

As far as feeling penalized. - technically you did go home sick and took a half day. So I’m not sure how that makes you feel penalized:. Most companies require you account for the full 8 hour day even while being exempt.

i am speaking from experience of having chronic migraines and having an exempt job

You must go the medical route. Expecting days to wfh, a quiet room etc are not necessarily approved accommodations so you must get your doctor to prescribe them. Even then a company may refuse them and it would be within their rights. But you must start with a very formal paper trail. It can't be. "I have a migraine and have decided to take a day at home." Your paper trail must start prior to the migraine. You then your logical response would be, "I'm following my doctor's orders". Then anything your manager does is in direct conflict of a doctor's orders.

Sorry but you need to be more strategic in your reaction.

As I'm confident you have looked into these, but there are amazing migraine bands out there, that DON'T cover your eyes that you may want to look into with your medical professional. It's not a penalty but if you're out of the business you should use your sick time. It's not feasible for any employee to have to pay someone who needs longer than 15 minutes while on the clock to go and lay down. IMO working at home vs office is not an answer. Migraines CAN BE determined to be a disability, but not all the time. Good luck.
