Does not having interpersonal connections with your teammates impact your performance?

I'm an international student who works remotely and hasn't met my teammates in person. I struggle to connect with them not because of language barriers, but because we lack a personal relationship. This makes communication challenging, as I've unintentionally alienated them in my mind.

Additionally, I feel that organizations, including the one I'm part of, emphasize diversity by hiring people from various backgrounds but don't provide avenues for us to share our experiences or learn about each other's cultures. This disconnect has made me feel estranged from my own culture and language, causing significant distress.

I think not having interpersonal relationships with your colleagues can make it difficult but I don't think you need to meet in person l, necessarily, to foster those relationships.

Remember though that relationships take time to build, and do take longer, I've found, when you work remotely. My trick has been to take the time to make small talk or chit chat before online meetings get underway - it can be as small as ask, 'what's the weather like there today?'

I have to acknowledge my privilege in living and working in my native culture, but I can imagine it would be distressing to always be working in a language and culture not your own, with no avenue to share it. Are there any interest groups or subgroups your company offers through Teams where you could meet like-minded people? (I ask this because my company seems to have interest groups for everything from Pets to different cities).

    Good luck.

Your company is hiring the best talent for the roles they have including you. It is up to you to incorporate into the team from your side of the equation by sharing things about yourself and culture that may enlighten them about you and how you work. Offer up some things in remote meetings or perhaps suggest doing this each weekly meeting by sharing an anecdote or custom specific to where you are from. Educating others about your world will bring you closer to them and hopefully them closer to you. Be prepared to answer questions and share personal things. You don't have to be in person to do this. If you need help doing so ask your HR person or direct manager to help you get this kick started. It should not cause you distress.

I personally don't think so (my job is my job but shouldn't be dependent on them) BUT I have certainly found that my job can be more difficult if I don't have a better connection with my teammates. Not long ago I was in a job where I was screamed at by a co-worker over the phone. It was upsetting, to put it mildly, and it was worse because I was too afraid to go to anyone (small business, no HR, this person is favored by the owner, etc.). So I was too intimidated to ask questions, etc.

It shouldn't have been like that at all, and yes, there's an argument I should have spoken up, etc. But this co-worker also chose to freak out and not to acknowledge his meltdown. So it didn't help.

I do agree with you on your second point, very much. That emphasis on diversity, inclusivity, etc. ends with hiring and organizations (at least in the US), do not really think about what any of that means or that cultural differences may mean that not everyone will understand or even know what are considered "standard" professional norms are and haven't had the opportunity to learn them for whatever reason.
